The first gun I bought is a Marlin 39, purchased in 1969 for $70 when the local J.C. Penney closed out it's outdoor sports section. Never had the urge to buy another lever-action .22. Decades later I picked up the front half of a 39 on Gunbroker (for nearly twice what I paid for the whole rifle) A touch of a Swiss file fitted it to my receiver. I then shortened the barrel to 17", fashioned a full-length forestock, and added a Skinnner sight. Now I have a snappy carbine or a scope-sighted 24"-barrelled rifle.
