Dad has one of the older ones that were a Davidsons special I believe. Blued with boat paddle stock and a short barrel. They are not accurate with surplus ammo(Wolf and SB included) and quality factory loads cost the same as say a 308 or 30-06. I don't see what the advantage is, unless you have a mountain of surplus laying around.

I bought one with the 20" barrel around 2002. My kids shot it alot with russian ammo not much recoil. Russian ammo used to be $2.50 a box of twenty, cheap, I saw some last week for $5.49 still kind of cheap, 2" to 3" pattern with Russian at 100 yds. A little smaller pattern with Winchester ammo. I love it, fun to shoot. Packed it on a goat hunt in 2003 because it was light, brought home a nice billy.

I have one of the stainless / composite 77 mk II in 7.62 x 39, and have shot several others just like it. Despite what the one poster stated about accuracy with surplus ammo, mine will put 5 rounds of Chinese or East German surplus ammo into 1.5" groups at 100 yards, and 5 rounds of Federal 123 grain softpoints into a group under 1". The other 3 that I have fired would also do just as well.....

They are fun rifles with light recoil and relatively cheap ammo.... One of my favorite shooting rifles...
