I have just purchased a Acusport .45 Colt 5.5" Stainless Bisley and would like to buy a good leather holster for hunting and hiking. Something that keeps it handy, but also stays out of the way and protects it a bit when I am in really rough terrain. It certainly needs to have a tie down of some sort to keep it from falling out. I think I'd like a belt holster, but am not opposed to other configurations particularly if you have found something that works well in the conditions I have described.

Would appreciate any suggestions based on any experiences of what works well when you have had in carrying such a fine gun out in the bush!

My favorite for the 5 1/2" Bisley is the Milt Sparks 200AW. There is no strap to hold it, but it has a retention screw that allow you to adjust the tension on the gun, and it is very secure. It has a tab of leather that protects and covers the hammer and it carries very well, one of the few for me that is comfortable on a pants belt.

I have used a Bianchi Hush System bandolier type holster for heavy handguns for many years. I have a scoped Model 29 (8 3/8") and a Ruger Red Hawk (7½") and can wear them all day with a light day pack with comfort. I definitely recommend the optional flap for best revolver protection in rough country. They offer this in both scoped and unscoped versions.

I also bought the optional padded belt (the holster is carried cross chest and also clips onto a belt) to carry a days supply of ammo and to stabilize the revolver.

A beautiful thing is it is so easy to quickly adjust the rig for use with light clothing to winter clothing.

A conventional holster works "OK" but is really made for horse back. The cross chest rig works for serious hunting in rough country better than anything I have tried.

This rig is not cheap but neither is it cheaply made. At least have a look at this rig before dismissing it (it is NOT "Cowboy" but it flat WORKS.

I go along with this one 100%. Added protection for the gun and top quality work.

Am I correct in remembering Elmer Keith had a hand in the design of that holster? Seems like he had a problem with the hammers on his M24's and 29's chewing up the lining on his coats. He asked Milt Sparks to make him a holster that covered the hammer but was still easy to draw from.

That's the story. I believe they make the same holster without the hammer shroud.
