Friends and I braved the cold Tallahassee morning to head to the range and do some shootin'. I had 4 loads to test, and this one was the ticket- it was worth chronographing too.

10 grains Unique
Oregon Trail 240 gr. LSWC
Remington once-fired brass
Winchester 'large pistol' primers
avg. velocity: 1201 fps

This group was fired 'standing on my hind legs' in the words of Mr. Taffin... The whole group measures 1.25" center to center including my last shot, which is not so much a 'flyer' as it is the result of my realization that I was cutting one ragged hole at 25 yards and the goofy excitement that followed that realization. The 4-round cluster measures ~.78". After I'm done cleaning my sweet old '59 flattop I'll load every .44 mag case I have with this load.

Good shootin"!

Did you have any leading issues? I have had with OT 250 gr SWC in 45 Colt and 10 grains of Unique. It looked like the lead was running out of the cylinder......

No kidding!?! I can't do as well with my old 10" FT from a benchrest and bags! Do you actually have a pulse woodpuppy?!? Hmmm...Dennis

I'D say you have mastered the 44 flattop :!: not the most comfortable gun to shoot :) NO flinching for sure  The one flyer is still good 8)

hutchman, no severe leading in this gun- besides, today's whole session was only 40 rounds. The gun I got bad leading with is my NM stainless .45, until I ran a patch loaded with JB bore paste 100 times through the portion of the barrel where it threads into the frame and 50 more through the entire bore. It's been much better behaved since. As far as 'handling' goes, it's in large part thanks to a SS ROA gripframe I installed. The XR-3 doesn't do it for me with the heavier loads, much as I like it with .38s and .22s. And do you know, I think gloves help too? (duh) I haven't tried this load bare-handed yet; I hope it feels as good as it did today.

Flatgate, you flatter me! Bucks, I was as surprised as you! the first 3 loads sure didn't group like that.

She is definately a keeper. This gun (and now this load) is what rides in my Ted Blocker CC1 holster when hunting hogs on a friend's family farm.

best,
Dave

Great work! I think we're all on the same page here. I tried one 17yrs ago and parted with it in favor of a Bisley, I recently acquired another and will give it another try. That load seams to work well even in the 4 5/8" barrels.

Excellent shooting.. That is a very empressive target. Your load is very similar to mine. I load the same powder and charge behind a 250 grain Keith style LSWC bullet. I've found it to do everything I need it to with good accuracy also. Been loading this load for several years and I've managed to harvest 2 or 3 deer with it(can't remember for sure how many).

Good on you Woodpuppy. That is also the way I like to shoot. As a "puppy" I was taught to stand on my hind legs and hold a pistol in one hand. The other arm is used for exact balance.

The two handed weaver stance is fine for close-in quick double action work against a mostly still target.

If the target is moving, the location uncertain, or really tight groups wanted, nothing beats the bullseye style for me.

The challenge has already been given by one of my friends - can I do it again? I guess we'll see, but probably not until after the holidays. There are other things to hunt besides paper right now.
