Man-made, bound to fail. Retaining walls, fill sites, etc., etc. Just a matter of time. Been involved in engineering and construction of different types all my life. All things man made have a time line. No one can know when they will fail, just that they will.
So far, no one has been injured or killed, thankfully. Is it worth reconstructing? Only Wyoming knows for sure.

whats cheaper? steel bridge or fill?? which would last longer?? and just how much traffic is actually using it.......hhhmmm
I've driven that stretch of road quite often. I would not say it is heavily traveled, but the alternative adds hours to the trip.

The WYDOT admitted this section of the highway has been "slipping" for years at a predicable rate. Thank God it failed in the middle of the night before peak tourist season. I do enjoy touring the parks at night when the "night shift" is active.

I have an innate fear of heights, and even driving on roads like that one. (Sheer drop-offs, no guard rails, etc.) Now my personal little inner gremlin feels justified.
Oh, it had guard rails... they fell away also... or were flattened by the track hoe that was on site before the news cameras.

Varying reports; "thousands" of cars a day, now must detour 110 minutes. Which will of course make THAT longer.

Don't look up when going westbound from Denver on I70. There's a LOT of rock held in place by what appears to be chain link fencing. At least there was last time I went that route.
Having traveled that route more than I like to remember, it's still there, the chain link is to try and keep it next to the hill, not to keep it from falling. It isn't even attached at the bottom....

Every time you go past stuff like that, as well as the unsecured freefall cuts, you will see another rock or 2 or ten that made it down...
