I made a sweep of the house today at 5:45 this morning in response to footsteps up and down the hall and into an empty room . Not the first time footsteps have been heard and once my wife saw an apparition watching her from a closet. No squirrels in the attic. Literally or figuratively. Anybody else wonder about such things.

We hear noises that sound like footsteps from time to time. I generally assume it simply the house settling from the temperature changes. And even if it were a ghost – the only other person to have lived in this house was my uncle who treated me with nothing but love when he was alive. If he came back as a ghost, why would he want to hurt me after he was dead?

I've never assumed anything malicious since nothing overt has occurred. The house is only 30 years old with 2 prior owners. The builder and the person I bought it from. And yes it creaks a lot when windy or cold. The footstep sounds at night are a bit unnerving.

For a number of years my daughter lived in a mobile home in Cresson, Texas. At times they would hear foot steps walking diagonally across the living room floor, but as if on the underside of the floor. And several nights my grand son was frightened by "a big black dog looking in the window."

Some time later, they learned a wagon train had had all members killed there by Comanches.

Are there such things as ghosts? Heck, I don't know. It's interesting to speculate about it. I've never seen or heard anything that I could identify as such, but I have an ex-wife and a cousin who swear they sense them darned near everywhere -- of course, they could be nuts (the ex-wife, especially). All I know for sure is, if they DO exist they are powerless to do anything to us, and the only harm that can come to us is by our own irrational reactions to their presence -- so why worry?

I once called a friend to wish him a Merry Christmas. He thanked me for calling, said he wasn't doing to good and that he'd been sick.

Come springtime I found out he died at Thanksgiving. Before I had talked to him.

My wife smells ghosts. I'm not kidding. She gets overwhelmed by a smell that she remembers a specific person smelling like. Nobody else can smell it.

The two times she smelled her great grandmother, my wife miscarried within 24hrs.

My son used to live in Suffolk, VA.
They used to hear footsteps upstairs...problem is the steps were the sef storing attic steps you pull down from the ceiling. They didnt use the upstairs. My granddaughter was scared to sleep in her own room because she said there was a man in there. My daughter in law used to see a man outside the window now and then. My son contacted a local author who had written a book about haunted sites and told them about it. They said to spread talcum on the upstairs floor. They heard footsteps so they went upstairs and looked. Sure enough, footprints in the talcum.
They did some research and found the original resident hanged himself from a tree that used to be in the back yard.

How about the guest room closet light that would come on by itself dim or bright, and stay on until dawn?
Trouble was, there was neither fixture nor bulb in the closet.

Never had any spiritual encounters my friend in NH have spoke to me about his.
They even go to place to hunt for them. Interesting I guess just waiting for my
encounter. Linda and I are going on 38 years when we were first married she woke
me up out of a sound sleep and told me her mother was there at the foot of the bed.
She had recently passed, I did not see anything but to this day I believe her.
They exist there just not interested in me i guess. ps

Our home was built in the 1950s. When there is no TV on, no furnace/air conditioner fan going, all kinds of strange noises can be heard. I am not a 'ghost' believer but some of the noises would probably be thought to be them by 'believers'.

I don't believe in ghosts of formally living people or those that claim they can talk to departed spirits, or witches, wizards, astrologists, and the like (see Deut.18: 10-12). The Bible in both the Old and New Testaments clearly state that the dead sleep in the dust until Judgment Day. However, there are evil spirits that try to deceive us into believing in ghosts and those communicating with them which is an abomination to God. If you think you saw your departed Granma in the middle of the night standing at the foot of your bed...it wasn't your Granma.

My wide and I shared a one time, truly rattling, experience of this kind.

It was a primal, virulent, sensation of immediate, palpable, evil that came over us simultaneously w/o any words exchanged. It took place late one night walking to our car in a previously unfamiliar neighborhood in Belgrade, Yugoslavia 40 years ago. We later learned the Gestapo had an interrogation center there during WWII.

We did not hear, see, or smell. anything in particular but some primal animal alarm node in our heads went off big time. Oh, and we do not do drugs!

It has never happened to us again.

I do not discount such encounters.

After my Daddy died in 1978, for three months afterwards we would hear foot steps in his and Mom's bedroom upstairs when all of us were down in the living room. Small pipe smoke cloud appeared one time in the evening by his chair, when nobody was smoking. It was winter and a slight indoor breeze would blow small things and spin a bread twist tie like a propeller on kitchen table (windows closed so no outside sourced breeze). Anyway, Mom woke one morning about 3 months after Daddy died and shared she dreamed she was talking to Daddy. Said he told her "you're going to be OK but I have to go somewhere else to live." She said she told Daddy she wanted to go too, but he replied "It's not not your time. But I will come for you when it is". Things never happened again after that. Take it for what it's worth. That's what happened. Don.

I worked in two military hospitals one at Clark RP, and one in the US. both were haunted as hell.

At the hospital in the states- even the hospital commander saw a "ghost"

He pulled into the parking lot, looked up at the third floor someone was lookin out the window with the light on in the back ground.

It was close to midnight.

He went up there to sign some papers he had forgot.

Nobody there, lights off and cold as the devil in the building. (on the third floor)

He remembers the shape in the window looked like it had a nurses cap on.

They did not wear that since the 80's

He beat feet for his staff car and took off.

I don't think I have ever encountered a ghost. There were some odd things that happened in the house I grew up in when I was very young. Both of my older sisters spoke of waking up in the middle of the night & seeing a man standing at the foot of their bed. My older sister that is 4 years older than me saw something else once. She had woke up early because she heard someone in the kitchen. She had done this the day before & ate breakfast with my father before he went to work while everyone else slept. Only this morning she was walking down the hall & heard drawers opening & closing in the kitchen, then she saw a figure come like a flash into the living room then quickly return to the kitchen. She went to go back to bed & walking by my parents door saw both of them in bed together. She got my mom up & they went & looked & found nothing. Shortly after this all these things quit happening. I asked my mother after I was older why she thought it had all stopped. She told me it was because she had prayed over the house & anointed it with oil (symbolic of the Holy Spirit). Nothing like that ever happened afterwards. Where we live now my oldest girl was seeing & hearing things when she was small. Her mother & I prayed over the house & in particular her room & anointed it. All of it stopped.
I do believe I have encountered spirits. Both the Spirit of God & at least one that was not good but I do not believe they were ghosts of dead people. Not going into all the gory details but yes I was scared & yes God freed me. The freaky thing is there have been two times I have talked with co-workers & they both had a similar encounter to the one I had with the evil thing. If ghosts are around & one has a chance encounter that is one thing. I would not seek such an encounter.

My younger cousin followed me around. Not like a puppy dog, but he just liked being around me. We had a lot in common but were 20 years apart. He would just watch me doing whatever I was doing. He loved to see and sit on my motorcycles.

He died after a motorcycle crash. I was in the hospital when he passed. He followed me around for over a year. Just watching me. I just always knew he was there. I'd tell him it was time to go, but he just hung around. I told my dad about him. When my dad passed I was in the room. He closed his eyes and stopped breathing. Then I felt my cousin finally leave me alone. It was such a relief, I can't even begin to describe it. I believe my dad took him to wherever they had to go.

My Mom told me the story about how when she was a young girl in MO, that her grandfather came into her room in the very early hours of the morning (around 3 AM) said nothing but just sat down on the foot of her bed. She said after a few minutes he got up smiled at her and left the room. She discovered later that he had passed away at about 3 AM. She was his favorite Grand Daughter.

As a kid I worked in a restaurant (Buxton Inn, Granville, Ohio) that was supposedly haunted. I never saw a ghost the whole time working there, but others said they saw things.
I just don't believe in ghosts, yeti, aliens, etc.

I worked in an 4 bed ICU, that sometimes only had one patient. My MIL stroked in 1998 ended up in the nursing home. For years while I was in that ICU at night with the lights turned down, I would see a grey "form". After she died, it went away.

My post from another board:
A small contribution, which has led to some continued interest in the paranormal.
We moved house when I was 10. Bigger house, two story, built in the late 40's IIRC. Early on I ,at least, would hear my name called and it wasn't my mom. (Went and asked.) My younger brother complained of seeing faces on the wall at night. The biggie occurred one early evening as I went up stairs to the second floor, The stair way left the main floor and went up to a landing, turned right and went up another 7-8 steps. At the top there was a hall with entrances to the bath, and my room on the left, entrances to my folks room and younger sister's room on the right.

I was about half way up from the landing to 2nd floor level when something white and irregularly shaped came out of my folks room. It might have been an arm given the height but had no real shape aside from an irregular length. There was no one else from the family up stairs. I don't think my feet touched the steps on the way back down, I went through the house to the TV room in the back of the first floor. I stopped next to my mom and she said, "you are just white." I don't remember if she said any more and I blurted out that an arm had come out of their (mom & dad's) bedroom. To which my dad said,"Was it a man's or woman's arm?" I replied, "It was white!" I had never been so scared, never saw it again and when ever I went up stairs in the evening I had to screw up my courage and make sure the light in the up stairs hall was on. If the story ended here it probably wouldn't mean much.

Many times we, as a family, would leave the house in the evening and my dad would see and complain that the attic light was left on by somebody. The attic stairs were accessed through a door in their bedroom BTW. One evening, as we were all called down stairs to get in the car and go somewhere, I made a point to be the last down. I turned off the attic light, which had a wall mounted toggle switch that wasn't the least bit worn out, having a firm click. I joined the family and as we pulled in front of the house in the car, my dad complained that the light in the attic was on. It was, I looked for myself and reported to my dad that I had turned the light off before we left. The subject of ghosts came up, several times, but being a religious family, there was no further discussion. One of the times I was visiting town long after my folks had moved again I went by that house at night, the light was on. ;)
