I had a friend of mine, some years ago when I was working for pay, tell me he was fishing once and saw a ball of mating cottonmouths. Suddenly a gator exploded out ofthe water and the ball of snakes disappeared.

Probably about 25 years ago my brother-in-law had just started a boat business near Jackson Lake which is about 53 miles South of Atlanta. He told me he had a customer tell him that they had caught a 2 foot long alligator in the lake. They also said they took it to the DNR game warden. The game warden told them that it was a protected species & they had better go put it back.
My sister & her husband lived on the lake at the time. We spent a lot of weekends playing in the water there, but we never encountered one.

Remember when Alligator products such as belts, shoes, and boots were popular in the 50s-60s. I still have an alligator belt from the 60s. Yea it doesn't fit but does bring back memories of being skinny :) :) In the early 50s a friend of mine brought a baby alligator back from a FL. vacation. Why I don't have a clue since it was a mean little bastard that wanted to bite your finger off. ;)
They do have their use in an Alligator Sauce Piquante or fried alligator

I do believe they can now be taken off the endangered list. The plan worked around here, since just about every pond and subdivision retention pond has them swimming around looking for lunch.

American alligators are currently listed as least concern by the IUCN Red List, even though from the 1800s to the mid-1900s, they were being hunted and poached by humans unsustainably.

Historically, hunting and habitat loss have severely affected American alligator populations throughout their range, and whether the species would survive was in doubt. In 1967, the American alligator was listed as an endangered species (under a law that was the precursor to the Endangered Species Act of 1973), since it was believed to be in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range.

Both the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and state wildlife agencies in the South contributed to the American alligator's recovery. Protection under the Endangered Species Act allowed the species to recuperate in many areas where it had been depleted. States began monitoring their American alligator populations to ensure that they would continue to grow. In 1987, the USFWS removed the animal from the endangered species list, as it was considered to be fully recovered. The USFWS still regulates the legal trade in American alligators and their products to protect still endangered crocodilians that may be passed off as American alligators during trafficking

There is a guy that lives near Buffalo NY that had a pet alligator for 34 years. It's 11ft long and weighs 750lbs. The State Department of Environmental Conservation confiscated his 🐊 for a lapsed permit that was not renewed due to Covid restrictions. The guy put a 250K addition on his house several years ago to accommodate his pet gator complete with a temperature controlled large pool and beach. The guy is fighting in court to get his gator back.
