Can anyone recommend a free email service that doesn't require a phone number? I had a gmail account created a long time ago, but when I tried to access it it said it needed a phone number to verify it's me. Sorry, not giving my phone number to google.

I've had Gmail for a long time. Every so often, it asks if I want to add a "recovery phone number" in case I forget my password. I just click the "not now" button and move on.
It sounds like you must have given them a phone number in the past.
I agree that Google is way too snoopy and intrusive. I disable all of their apps except for Gmail.
