For the VERY serious collector out there

About 10 years ago ( or 15? ) I flirted with buying a collection similar to this. It also was not complete ….. a few guns were even missing the shipper or box or both.

Many of the guns I was most interested in were already gone. The 44 Carbine, 10/22, Model 77 and many of the Six Series double actions that are my favorites. I used to see that collection advertised on different forums and auction sites but lost track of whether he finally found a buyer for the whole - incomplete - pile or pieced them out one by one.

I've been buying up the 100 serial number guns when I come across them for sale and I've decided I will pay a 10% premium on top of the guns worth for new models, which these look to all be new models (Old Models is a far different equation). If its priced higher than that it has to be a special model to deviate. So far, I've only passed on a couple. To do the math on their asking price if we deduct my self imposed 10% premium we come up with $109,090 ($109,090 plus 10% is $120,000). We then take that number divided by 86 units and come up with an average price of $1268. Without the full list it's hard to decide if that is an appropriate number but based on the models visible in the couple of pictures it seems high. Not a lot of New Model collectors out there to compete for it.

I dont get the logic of buying in bulk and paying full retail or retail plus 10% ……. Bulk buys should warrant a discount; especially when this bulk buy in sorely incomplete with many of the most desirable items missing.

Well Hell, I'll just whip out the checkbook and we're off to the rodeo!
Someone is going to have to have deep pockets for that collection or it will be parted out at some point and sold a piece at a time.

For my reference it was when I come across a single 100 serial number firearm. I'm willing to pay a 10% premium on a new model given the low serial number and the fact I already own a dozen plus of them. I would do the same if there were more than one. I get the bulk discount on a multi-unit purchase but when the serial numbers match there is a premium added for the matching, or sequential, numbers. All you have to do is look back through the for-sale section to see matching or sequential numbers that have sold for way over their individual prices.

I have seen some of the OM two-digit collections broken up in the past year, so I don't see a New Model collection of this size surviving. I would be VERY surprised if this set stays together and wonder how long before it starts to get broken up into smaller pieces to sell.

I totally get your logic hunting the number 100 guns, it makes sense. Just referring to this particular group with #64.

And I'm the oddball ….. just don't see the premium on same or sequential numbers.

IN MY OPINION.....................
They don't make old models anymore.

And really, which serial # looks cooler

I know this is a thread hi-Jack but since it drifted to serial numbers here goes. When Remington brought out the model 700 in I believe 1962, my dad ordered a 7 mag through the little mom and pop sporting goods store. When it came in it had serial number 2468. After I inherited the rifle and used it on deer antelope and elk I gave it to my son to hunt with and pass down done day. Several years later I was scrolling through GB looking at flattop 357s gif s custom project and one popped up with serial number 2468! Nothing special except it matched the old model 700 so I bought it, put a set of stags on it and it too went my oldest son. Thst is the only old model flattop I have ever bought that other than the grip swap did not get customized if converted.

There, that is my thread hi-Jack for the week!😄
