I have serial#20319 which makes it a 1955 flat gate? my question is, is there any way to tell if the barrel has been changed. I tried the 7/32 drill bit & it goes in the end of the barrel.

thanks

The barrel should have Sturm Ruger & Co. stamped on it. It should not have INC. That being said that barrel, with just CO. stamped on it, was used all the way up to the early 60s way past the Flatgates. So if the barrel doesn't have INC. then it could have been changed with one of the later barrels past the 150,000 serial number range that just had CO. stamped on the barrel.

To sum up:
If it has INC. on the barrel it's been changed.
If it has just CO., I would mike the barrel bore and if it is the larger diameter then it must have been changed.

I'd say your barrel is the "correct" one for a flatgate, as obviously a 7/32 " ( .21975) will drop in your gun, , I use a number #2 drill for the later .mag barrels as it is .2210", and approximates the 'land' size ,not the groove. Not sure of the "exact" sizes, "lands, and groves",as the "nominal" bore diameter is .222" for the 22 lr and .224" for the magnums...........but as street noted the barrels with the "Inc" or the adjustable sights SC's, the #2 drill "fits" and will NOT go in to the early flatgates, not even close....just for "grins & giggles" I tried a few laying around here to verify this.........

it is unconverted & looks all original. I don't know why I even thought about checking it.
I guess the important thing is I like the way it feels & shoots.

Wow, that's one of those extremely rare versions with the barrel rollmarked STRUM and not STURM ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Sorry, the Joker in me just couldn't resist.

Enjoy your early Single-Six. Those early guns with the flat loading gates are indeed my favorites!!!
