Ran across a fixed-sight 4" square-butt marked "Security Six" today at a LG&P. Serial # is 150-017XX, so obviously very early. Looks to be all original and is in reasonable condition. Has some holster wear and what I'd call light freckling. Cylinder is starting to "plum".

Priced as a shooter at $379 - could probably pay 10% or so less.

Any idea how uncommon these are? Value?

Slightly high for a shooter grade, but, if and when I see one of these early fixed-sight Security Sixes, I will gladly pay too much.

This was the first center-fire Ruger I ever bought, and like too many others, it's one I traded away. They do surface occasionally, but never when I'm in the neighborhood.

WAYNO.

The early model fixed sight Security Sixes (later to be changed to Service Six and then Police Service Six) are much sought after. With that s/n it is probably 2nd or 3rd year production (I don't have my reference book with me right now).

The freckling should be able to be removed pretty easily with some 0000 steel wool and some gun oil. Rub it very gently and it will come off, then just keep it wiped down good after use. Depending on how much holster wear would (for me) would determine whether or not it was a shooter or a collector piece.

$379 is a good price.

Here is the one I have:

very nice... I have to stop reading these posts or I won't be able to stop myself from getting another one. hey do they have a 12 step program for six series revolvers?

let's see,,,,,nope, it's more like a multi year program, you just continue to try to collect all the different Six series guns and then you either get them all or you get old and die. :D (and by then hopefully you will have infected your heirs also  )

edlmann,

Great deal!!!! I never come across deals like that. If a deal like that would cross my path I would snag it in a heart beat. Then sit starring at all my six's with big wide open eyes.....my precious!!!!! LOL!!!

Good gun, that will clean up pretty easily from what I see. Use 0000 steel wool and a light gun oil to take the feckling off. The hammer and trigger will clean up easy, use a dremel tool with an abrasive buff, it will take off all the corrosion and leave it like it came from the factory
