Going shopping tomorrow and want to trade a 98% Super Redhawk 9.5 inch .44. I guess I should study GB but am hoping friends here can help me figure what I should ask. Have all papers and box. Thanks, Don

I don't know what your gun is worth, but if you are going to trade at a gun shop, or a dealer, you can expect to get around 60 percent of the real value. They have to pay overhead and make a profit. Much better to sell outright. Just my 2 cents

I agree that an outright sale to someone is gonna net you more of a true value vs what a dealer or gunshop will give you. They have to make a profit & they can't afford to buy at close to retail a used gun, when they buy wholesale. Besides,, they can usually buy a NIB gun for a little less than what you could sell your 98% gun.
Gun shows or classifieds & auction sites are the best places!

Actually, 60% of retail is somewhat generous. Many dealers will sell a used gun for what they can buy a new one for at dealer cost. Retail is around $950 so your gun would sell in the neighborhood of $500. The dealer will most likely offer you something in the $400 to $450 range. As already stated, advertise it and sell it privately.

Thanks all. It is a show I'm going to I should have clarified. Have my SRH setting on the table waiting for a friend to show up who's going with me. Sure is a handsome gun, what with that sewer pipe / artillery-looking tube sticking out the end..... and she locks up so tight and has virtually no end shake. Will have to be a fine specimen of something I trade toward to wrench this one from my hands. Dang that anticipated seller's remorse.

I highly doubt that you would get those numbers ... I would think a dealer would be in the $300-350 range at most.

Sell it here on the forum ... probably get $500 or a little more for it.

You gotta figure too, that you're in a better position to wheel and deal if you've got cash instead of a trade.

I don't know your area, but around here most of the regular gun show dealers are pretty cut-throat. After you start going to the shows and talking to them, you start to figure out the ones who actually want to make a deal or 2, and the ones you only stop to talk to if you want to argue a bit!
That way you can get it out of your system before you get home and the wife wants to know what you spent this time....

That is almost a 40% profit! With the prices of today, single actions bring that much in trade with the box and papers.

tallbald, Here is some advice that has worked well for me over the years at gun shows when I didn't have a "table". Walk around the show 3 or 4 times and look the tables over real good to "separate" the dealers from the collectors while "showing" your gun under your arm in the box or a case. You "will" get some questions as to "what" you have in the box, trust me! This is the "point" where you begin to "dicker" as to whether or not you really want to sell your gun. Go from there as to how the "dickering" is going with whomever, to get your "best" price. Don't accept the "first" offer you get unless it is a very good one. Keep walking and drawing attention!.......................Dick

It is according to my math. I doubt there is many dealers who can boast a 40% profit routinely.

Thanks for all the input folks. Sort of a moot point though. Had hoped to find a stainless Bearcat or a fixed sight Old Army, but didn't see a single one of either. Told my wife though that in a way I was glad I still had my SRH. Did help my friend buy an as new in box 2.25 inch SP101.
