I have a little project I need some opinions on. I have an older Vaquero .45 with a long barrel that I am going to have shortened. My question is: how effective is the ejector on a Ruger .45 with a 3.75'' barrel? I can't decide wether to keep the ejector, or just cut it down to 3'' and get rid of it altogether.

I have a pair of Birdshead Vaqueros and I find that the ejectors work just fine.

The cylinder pin does have a flat head that doesn't reduce the distance the ejector can travel so I'd recommend that option.

Look at my post here with similar questions. Maybe that is where you got the idea from already though.

Here are the pic of the gun. I think it looks pretty nice:

And a pic of the groove he made for extraction. He said that this works fine for him as long as he doesn't shoot hundreds of rounds without cleaning.

With my 3.75" Sheriff model .45 I get a stroke of .480" with my 4 5/8" Birdshead .45 I get a stroke of .594". Both extract easily though. Me I like the feature.
Spent 25 years living in Anchorage, saw most of Alaska with my job, this time of year I don't miss it. Loved the summers though.

Keep the ejector it looks good on there.

With the flat head on the cylinder pin, like bnewberry mentioned, it does a good job of ejecting spent cases. I don't think it is quite long enough to clear the case completely, but if you eject them with "enthusiasm" it works. Least it works as good as my 5.5 inch 44 Vaquero. I would recommend a free spin pawl.

With custom work being done should be covered,if not you will have an extra hump and a hole on the frame where the ERH was.I like both in looks as both look right, but functionally I prefer the housing being there.

my personal preference is to include the ERH. I like the way it looks.

here is a link to some neat tricks that can lengthen the stroke of the ejector rod.

Thank you for posting the link, the last days I´ve been wondering were I read about this trick, of course it was at Gunblast. :D
I must be getting senile..
I will copy this trick on my shortened Single-Six. 8)

Not Rugers but heres mine,Gun in the fore ground goes about 50 rnds. with only using my finger nail to remove cases and then you get a few that need a push from a wooden dowel. That or I'll just run a brush trough the chambers real quick. The gun in the back ground is in Colts Custom Shop right now getting the barrel changed to 3 1/2" with ejector assembly. I get it back in 2 weeks.
