Can this be done without shortening the barrel or will the slot show if I just remove the front sight and cut a dovetail?

Dovetailed sights are in the 3/8" range. The slot would show.

If you just want a dovetail front sight, since it's a stainless gun, just have the ends of the slot Tig welded to fill them in. Dress down and polish, then cut the dovetail.

Or if the front sight is so far off, that the rear sight adjustment puts the notch way off center, I'd send it back to Ruger to correct for free.

Thanks Hondo, I thought I'd read that on here but wanted to verify.

Unfortunately the guns are blued. They shoot well as is but I get a better sight picture with a wider front sight. Looks like I either get to trim the barrels, have a front sight base installed, or have them built into a 475 and a 500 Linebaugh lol.

I like that! And brass will blacken with bluing solution if needed, and I could serrate the front of the sight with no risk of damaging anything. Had no idea that existed.
