We had cap guns where you took the bullet apart and put a little circular cap inside put it back together and when you fired due to a hole in the bullet the smoke came out the barrel. Time out time out I'm reloading.

That Shootin' Shell Fanner actually sent real plastic bullets out the barrel. Not a tack driver but you could get the "bad guys" 15 feet or so away.

OK, that sucks. I had one of those. I also had a whole collection of Hot Wheels that I sold in 1980. I got about $500 if I remember correctly- now I see some that I distinctly remember going for thousands!☹️

I do still have one of the early Daisy air soft Lugers that takes individual casings from a magazine- the Casings hold the pellet. When you fire it toggles back and ejects the empty casing…

I remember those.
We had toy pineapple grenades with a metal striker. You tore one or two from a sheet and put them in the striker.

I also have these somewhere too, I'll have to look for them sometime. It's got me thinking 🤔
The cannon is spring loaded firing.

My favorite cap gun was a Mattel that was a copy of a Thompson (military version copy). Mine was done up in WWII camo but I remember other kids that had one that looked like blue steel and wood (all plastic, of course, but sturdy stuff). The stick magazine part was hinged and opened forward to accept a roll of the "greenie" caps, the bolt locked back and when you pulled the trigger it went "full auto" on the roll of caps! Mine looked like the one on top here:

I remember watching Combat with Vic Morrow as Sgt. Saunders, and he carried a Thompson. One year I got a pretty good report card and my dad took me to a local toy store to pick something out as a reward. I came home with a wood/blued version just like the one shown. Pretty sure it was Mattel and cost $5. Don't remember what caps I used. I also remember my dad taking me and a friend to Sears to buy us green berets like John Wayne wore in the movie.
