Deluxe Sporter, the model with the cut checkering and the walnut
stock? I'm in the process of helping a cousin get into shooting
rifles and I don't care for the chintzy American Hardwood stained
stock so I'm going to push him gently in that direction, like me
he will never sell or trade it once he has it. He has been a lifelong
pistol and revolver shooter until recently and this is my way of
introducing him to rifles. I'd steer him in the direction of a 77/22
like I have but the cost is higher and the fun factor for a beginner
is higher with the ability to shoot 10 rounds in a row without
needing to work the bolt. I would like to show him some good
quality images of one that are easier to see than the small ones
in printed catalogs. Thanks in advance gang!!

From the Ruger site:

Why not make it even nicer and go for the Classic III:

Blackhawk73, I appreciate those a lot, I didn't even know that the
Classic III existed, is it a distributor only offering? None of my local
dealers have a Deluxe Sporter in stock at the moment or I'd have
taken my cousin to see and handle one. For some reason probably
related to my Windows registry being cluttered up with junk and old
links, when I go to Ruger's website no pictures come up when I
select a model I wish to see. :(

I really like that Classic III , but I wish it had an option for a no sight barrel. Could swap it out but would rather ot came sans sights.

I just put my pristine 1985 checkered Walnut Deluxe 10/22 DSP up for auction on gunbroker:

It's almost reached my reserve.

I had a chance today to handle a 10/22 Classic III and although I love the stock configuration the wood grain was significantly less then the one pictured on the Ruger sight. Of course they always picture the best wood but this was almost beech like in grain. Add to that the new Ruger plastics used in the trigger assembly and the plastic finish on the receiver. I had cash in hand ready to buy and just handed it back to the dealer. Thanks but no thank you. Now if I find a nice low used older vintage 10/22 and could find a stock like what is on the Classic III..... Sounds like my next project.
