My favorite load in my #1 is 48 grns of IMR 4198 and a 300 grn hollow point. Whitetails and ground hogs just hate it :D
This may be a little too hot for your Marlin so you might be better advised to start lower and work your way up. You might check some of the loading manuals before trying it. It shows no pressure signs in my Ruger #1 but each gun is to itself when it comes to handloading. It's not going to be a pleasant load in your Marlin in any case.

26.5 grains of 2400 with large pistol primer under 350gr Oregon Trail Laser Cast. Same load for the 405 grainer also.

Puts it out between 1300-1500 fps depending on bullet

Very good load...this is right at 1.9cc with a Lee Dipper

In my Guide Gun I had great luck with a 300gr HP (either Hornady or Rem) over 56.4 grains of IMR 3031. Gave around 1,900 fps with 1.5" groups and very manageable recoil.

I find the pistol primers interesting also. My 25-20 shoots 2400 loads much more accurately with pistol primers (CCI). But I've never thought to use them with my 45-70 ; also loaded with 2400. Another experiment awaits, methinks.

4.4CC of Schuetzen FFg under a Montana Precision 405 grain bullet lubed with SPG. Powder is compressed .100" and a .030 thick .465 dia vegetable fiber wad is seated on top of the powder before the bullet is seated. Case is very lightly crimped. I use this load in my Pedersoli Sharps.

The reason I asked is that I only started loading for 45-70 this year after the primer shortage kicked in. I have been loading for 45 colt for a good while. I was prepared for the current primer market, some might say hoarding, for large pistol primers. Being able to use WLP in my 45-70 would be a big help in the short term. Thanks GH.

I've tried several, so far my favorites for fun shooting and plinking are:

19.0 grains of 2400, 405 grain RNFP, Winchester LR Primer
13.0 grains of Trail Boss, 405 grain RNFP, Winchester LR Primer

I'm still looking for a load I like using a real rifle powder, I've tried H4198 with good results, but consistency has been hit or miss. Perhaps a heavier charge could be better, as it works quite nicely in my .444 Marlin.
