I don't know what is going on in this country. I live in the largest city in my state. The state prison is also in this city, always has been. Still called a penitentiary here, but there is a proposal to change it to the state correctional institute, go figure. Anyway, most of the parolees from the prison abide in this city because there aren't many parole offices in the outback. So, we have several badasses running around. Not hard to ID them, most have prison tats, attitude, etc. Best to avoid. Thing is, there getting to be more and more of them, and there is quite a rate of return, as they tend to hang with others of their kind, get back into drugs and so on. Not so much fun to be out after dark, no matter where you live.

We've had shootouts with the cops in a Burger King, traffic accidents when they are running from cops with innocent people injured, stand-offs in mobile home courts, casino robberies, liquor store and gas station/convenience store robberies, etc. This used to be a really nice city, still is, for the most part. Native americans, blacks, hispanics, and some real white trash, we got 'em all. Equal opportunity prison. :)

I wonder how much of this is because there really aren't many decent paying blue collar jobs anymore. What do you do with no education and no real skills? Service industry jobs don't pay crap and usually are filled by high school kids.

Just ramblin', trying to figure it out.

I think it will get to the point where it rapidly comes to a unhappy conclusion for the bad people. Must American citizens that strive live a decent life will one day put an end to what is going on by whatever means necessary.

I've passed through Sioux Falls and spent the night there on a few occasion. Thought it was a nice town. Even thought that it might be a place to consider if I ever get to leave the awful state of Illinois. Sorry to hear its going downhill.

Sorry to hear your relatively isolated city is going thru this :( It never occurred to me that an isolated city would have these social issues.

More good cops is probably the peaceful solution.

I had a DOC officer once tell me a fun way to look at inmates. He sees a lot of repeat offenders. He always asks them; "I see you are back. Was it the food or the sex? Well, it can't be the food, because that's terrible!"
I busted a gut laughing.
Seriously,, it used to be that going to jail or prison meant you had a hard time of general life ahead of you for the term of your sentence. Nowadays, the thugs look at it as a badge of honor to go to jail.
It should ONLY be called a "Correction Facility" if it actually corrected their bad behavior.

It is a good city, don't get me wrong. Maybe we are just growing up and becoming an urban center, so gunfire isn't totally out of the ordinary. :( It just seems to me that there is a complete lack of respect for your fellow citizen anymore. I see older folks being pushed out of the way or being bitched at because they aren't moving fast enough, people reaching over your shoulder at the grocery store because they don't have enough patience to wait until you have gotten what you stopped for, etc. Drivers taking serious chances in the hope of moving up a couple of spaces. I spent my career in cities much larger than this one, so I'm not Rube Goldberg when it comes to social interaction, but it really seems to be going downhill in a hurry. Just me in my senior years, I guess.

Speaking of gun fire... I sleep outside on a screened in porch year round here in my 'town' and it is not usual for me to hear a shot or two go off in the middle of the night. Probably a half mile away or so. I'm in a very 'safe' low crime neighborhood but we do get the midnight crawlers on occassion. The are the punks who come early in the morning and check for cars unlocked and go through them.

BTW- here in TN the right of way on the hiways are mowed by contractors with new John Deere tractors with Mexicans driving them. All the while the convicts (yes convicts is what they used to be called before political correctness kicked in) lay up in our new 5 million dollar jail and watch TV. They don’t know how lucky they are that I am not running the show.
