I just bought this MKII MK678GC. I was looking on the web for info about this model & this came up from an old Jack the Dog auction:

Here's a somewhat scarce "Distributor Special" variation of the Ruger Mark II pistol. This is a Ruger MK678GC (Model 0178) Government Competition with 6-7/8" slab-sided bull barrel and factory drilled and tapped receiver. One of just 991 such pistols produced in 1996 for Go Sportsmen (MN) which all fall within the known serial range 218-62413 to 218-69307

His serial range makes this #1. Kind of curious if those numbers are true.

Never buy the first one. Plagued with problems. Always buy the second year with cars and guns.
Send it to me for proper testing and disposal.

That info came out of the "Reference of Ruger Firearms" where it says "known serial number range", which means that that is the serial number range of the model that had been seen or reported, not necessarily the first or last of the model that was produced.
Just plugged 218-62412 into Ruger's serial number lookup page and it also comes back as model 0178.
