1000 fps is excessive.

Are you kidding? A 280 @ 1,000 would be minimal, IMO. A 405 @ 1,000 wouldn't even be excessive.

Apparently you've never killed or gutted a deer. It is excessive in the fact that it exceeds what is necessary.

Here's a great article on the 45 colt by John Linebaugh if you've never read it. He mentions the 260 Keith cast at 900 as being a superb hunting load. He states it will go lengthwise through a mule deer at 100 yds. Some of his favorite loads use HS6 as well.

I hunt with a .44 mag loaded to just about that same energy. The next buck I drop, I'll ask him if the load was too weak or too heavy. [sarcasm off]

It's not the load. A heavy bullet will deliver plenty of impact. It's making sure you get a good shot at a good angle. This will probably mean passing on a few shots that would have been easy with a rifle. That's what makes hunting with a handgun a real challenge.
