DA vs SA - SP101

Help Support Ruger Forum:

Hello, I am new to this forum and I have something to contribute to this thread. I have a DAO SP101 in .38 spl as issued by the NYPD. The hammer spur is bobbed and the hammer cannot be cocked to shoot SA. The model of the revolver is the Ruger SPNY.

That is correct, the NYPD Ruger revolvers were true DAO revolvers, other than a special contract that were SA/DA. The hammers of the NYPD revolvers were not machined with the single action notches so they cannot be operated in the single action mode.

OK, found a hammer (parts kit) and removed the spur. I'm still confused about removing the single action notch on the hammer. I presume it's the tiny notch on the bottom of the hammer (see arrow on pic). Is that correct?

I would not mess with the single action notch at all. You'll be firing it DAO so having or not having the SA notch won't change a thing. But having it would allow you the SA function, if need be.

Also, the hammers are notched (metal removed) for SA when machining these hammers. The true DAO hammers never had the SA notch machined into them. The only way to "remove" the SA notch would be to add metal and then smooth it out. You would also need to be aware of the shape of the hammers sear engagement ledge (sometimes called the "toe" of the hammer) so that you don't change any dimensions.
