cylinder over rotating?

I was shooting a 1994 .45 Vaquero this afternoon and was having problems with the cylinder not lining up with the barrel. The pin hit the edges of two primers without setting them off (I was lucky) and the base of several other cartridges. I can make the empty cylinder over rotate by cocking it quickly with my left thumb. I bought the revolver used earlier this year and know nothing of its history. It does fine when cocked slowly. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Any suggestions are welcome.

Stop shooting the Vaquero! Unless you have a good working knowledge of the lockwork, which, IMHO, you don't, you need to either have a good Gunsmith or the Ruger Factory perform some intricate tests and rectify the situation.

I don't plan on using it again until I have my gunsmith take a look at it. You are quite correct that I do not mess with the lockwork of my revolvers. This is certainly not something I want to try to fix myself. Has anyone else had a similar thing happen to them?

I've had a similar thing happen with a SAA clone, it isn't all that rare. But the lockwork is quite different than a Ruger. I know what to look for inside a SAA when it is overrotating, but I would have to study up to figure out what was going on inside a Ruger.

Yep....you was lucky.
Yep...seen it happen.
Yep....It's happened to me.
Yep.... Flatgate is right about not shooting it again untill it's fixed.

At the minimum, your gun might just need a good cleaning/servicing. But it might also be in need of some parts and/or the undoing of someone's "action job"....or who knows what....some of these cowboy guns has seen a rough life.

I know that aint much help but without the gun in my hand, that's about all I know to tell you.
