When I was about 12 I had a Great Uncle that was a coin collector. He also owned a General Store. When he died my Grandpa took a leave of absence from his job to go and help his Sister-in-Law keep the business going. I stayed there for a weekend and helped. On my way out my Great Aunt opened the huge safe and gave me 3 rolls of cents for my help.
They were uncirculated rolls of 1943 steel cents. One a P, one a D and one an S.
That got me started. We had 2 delicatessens within walking distance and I was responsible for going to get milk and such. Both had real nice ladies as owners. I made a deal with both that they would save any steel cents in the drawer and I would take them next time I went shopping. That was my tip from Mom for going to the store.
In the early 1960's they were still in circulation. Boy I got quite few from those walks!
