First off thanks for the assist in advance

to keep this short ill skip the why part other than getting wife into the hobby and returning to it myself from not shooting for many years, will be for weekend and range plinking.

i had a mk ii years ago i should have held onto but didnt.

looking at the current mk iv series, and rembering how much a pain take down was with the mk ii, the 4 seems to have solved that condition.

will be a 22/45 lite " wifes choice "

LGS quoted me 450.00 for a new bronze lite mk iv, but their distributor is currently out with no eta . They also have a new mk iii 22/45 on the shelf for 390 but we havent talked deal yet on it.

the wannamaker show is in tulsa this weekend and we will be attending if at all possible, looking for deals.

not that ill find any but is the take down on the new mk 4 worth 100.00, if i find a new mk iii for 325 ish is the iv take down worth the difference ??

thanks all

Welcome to the Forum!
You mentioned it being a pain to take down the MKII. The MKIII is a bit worse than the MKII. Actually, taking them apart is the easy part,,, it's the re-assembly folks have issues with.
Hold out,,, & get the MKIV.
You will not be sorry. It's EASY,,, and your happiness will be worth the extra. Besides,,, at Tulsa,,, you may be able to save some of that difference.

I just traded my older 22/45(base model with no grip panels) on an MKIV Target model. I considered myself an expert at takedown and reassembly as I could do it in under a minute with ease, and as Contender said the Mark III is more difficult to reassemble. That being said, the Mark IV takedown and reassembly is magical, it's worth every penny. Get the Mark IV, period. The last big show I was at there were venders with almost every variation of the Mark IV series guns and I fondled them all before I made my final decision.

Words discribing how easy the take down of the Mark IV is,are harder to come by than the actual "pistol take down".
You won't regret your purchase!

I have also been considering the same. I have a couple 22/45 targets and a Mark III standard. I have been taking them down on a regular basis but there always seems to be something. I was going to add a Lite to my mix and was OK with going Mark III as the prices go low but I might wait and see what the prices are around Thanksgiving for a "magical" takedown gun instead. I think you guys sold me.

The MkIV is certainly the "wave of the future" for Ruger and the MkIII is now effectively obsolete and the prices will (and already have) drop. If you are comfortable with their disassembly/reassembly then you can get a bargain in a 22/45 MkIII Lite. Otherwise, the MkIV is certainly worth the extra cost and will hold it's future value far better.

"is the iv take down worth the difference ?? "

If you're one of those who feel the need to dis-assemble the pistol frequently, then the MK IV is probably a good idea for you.

thanks all, my LGS still doesnt have a time the mk iv 22/45 bronze will be in stock at their distributor, so sat we will make the wanamaker show and check that out. pretty well have decided on the mk iv, but i want the wife to check the feel of a buckmaster, and maybe a sig just for comparison.

and after a bit of luck at the local casino i will be looking for a single six as well, that way she can learn the feel of both, and have two nice .22 for plinking

If you can find a target model with the Altamont grips I really recommend having her hold one of them. The grips transform the gun for me, I bought the blue target model because I liked the reduced weight of the aluminum frame, installed the HiViz front sight from the Hunter, and ordered the grips right from Altamont because I wanted a plain grip.

I like my Mark IV over my Mark III both 22/45s. Make sure you try out the trigger before buying it. Mine was horrendous at 6 lbs with a lot of creep. After adding a Volquartsen Trigger Kit its a smooth and reliable 2.5 lbs. Added a Tandemkross trigger and got it down to 1.5 lbs.

If you don't mind the takedown of the Mark III, it's real easy to put back together if you do it during a full moon with your tongue held just right and your fingers crossed. I'd get the Mark III. After a few times of following the instructions you should be able to put it back together in under 5 minutes.

Welcome. You came to the right place for advice. Some of these guys amaze me with their knowledge of anything Ruger. I would also hold out for the MK IV.

Funny thing, I have a 50th Anniversary MK II, and have had a Tactical Solutions Pac Lite barrel on it for some time. I ordered one of the Hammer Strut Supports that are for sale here, and thought since I have it apart I would swap back to the factory barrel / receiver. I usually don't have a problem with these, but this time I did. IT WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE NEW HSS I INSTALALLED, IT WAS USER ERROR! Been a while, and I forgot to push the hammer forward. DUH!

howdy again all:

wife and i spent about 4 hours late this afternoon at the wanamaker show in tulsa, worth every penny, i got to hold and check several pistols.

there were one 1 or 2 mk iv 22/45 in the building, all the dealers say they cant keep them in stock. saw a few mk iii new for sale, but imo they were to high. Wife has decided she wants sr22. I had convinced myself i needed a 9mm. i havent really shot anything in 30 years so i have alot to remember. wife has never shot untill she fired the new hd shotgun this morning. i will say if you looking for a 9 the sr1911 from ruger fits smaller hands very well, but i picked up a mk iv hunter and that was it.

so this begins the the hunt for a new sr22 and mk iv hunter, i will give my local shops first shot before i go to the net. id rather give a local shop a extra 75.00 or so just to help them, because if they go, what are we left with ??

i did also see that with a cpl exceptions prices we not any better than what i have seen at the LGS's

thanks again

I don't see what the big fuss is about. I've been shooting the hell out of MKIII's for 7yrs now and if it weren't for installing VQ accurizing kits, I probably would not have taken them apart at all. Perhaps some folks are overzealous in their cleaning regimen???

I really don't think the term "obsolete" is being properly applied here. Easier takedown is not going to render the MKIII obsolete any more than the MKIII rendered the MKII, MKI or Standard Auto obsolete.

That's debatable.

Good for both of you, I too like the Mark IV Hunter. As for the SR22, there's a bunch of color options available if your wife is so inclined, I would also recommend a magazine loader for both guns to save your thumbs. Go to Gallery of Guns to price the guns out, when you do a search you'll see if your LGS is there and what they charge.

And............if MaMa can wrap her mitts around those Altimont grips, you don't want to mess with MaMa.
