CORRECTION: After reading some other posts, I guess I was measuring the barrel wrong, it is 5-1/2" from muzzle to face of cylinder…

Hello all,

I'm down a rabbit hole with my "new to me" Old Model Single Six 22 cal revolver.

Here's what a I know;

The serial number is 804xxx
4 clicks
The barrel is 4-5/8"
No safety conversion has been performed
It has the XR3-RED (ALCOA) grip frame
Walnut grips with silver logo
Steel cylinder rod and ER

I did not get any box, paperwork or any other cylinders or accessories with it, just the revolver.

Any idea of date of mfg? Scarcity? Etc etc?

the early #800,000 guns were late1968 and then into early 1969 my guess is the grips, if they are silver and NOT just missing the black paint??? are later, from like 1970-71 and it is missing the cylinder ( 22 mag or vice versa, depends which one is in the gun,,,may need a factory letter to know for certain as to if it shipped as an RSS4 or with the X ( convertible) ....nice gun and have belonged to one of Jim Schaefers relatives????if only it could talk..... NICE gun:cool:;)

and thank you for correcting the barrel measurement, kinda thought the end of the barrel stuck out a bit too much...and the pictures you sent show the black paint is indeed missing for the medallions, easy fix.....

Thank you for responding!

It has the 22lr cylinder. Is it possible to buy the wmr cylinder and it will fit/work?

Is it worth me finding a box for it?

Should I write to Ruger for a letter of authenticity?

Was it worth $339?

Yes, that is a very good price as I said it appears to be a really nice gun ,,,just cannot tell by the pictures if the medallions are truly silver ( squashed chicken) or the black ones, paint in the middle of the eagle and NOT around the bird...yes has the proper black ( dark ) screw and escutcheons) and yes a factroy letter will tell you just what the gun shipped as and RSS4 or RSS4X , convertible or not and yes thatlate vintage you can add another cylinder, just need the overall length to match the one in your gun nowm guessing its like 1.620" or so,,,,my email is : [email protected] if you want to send me a close up of the grips medallions

good luck

Yes, it is possible to find a 22 Mag cylinder that'll fit and function. Get the total length of your current cylinder and look to buy one that same size or a tad longer.

About the box …. Depends on how much you want invested in the package. I'm not smart enough on the Single Actions to confirm exactly which box it should have.

Ruger charges a whopping $10 for the letter so in my mind ….. all the old guns are worth getting verified.

It's worth what you paid and more. I think the short barrel OM Single Six's may be one of the LEAST common lengths.

Here's a link to a resource you might like if you're wanting to learn a lot more about Rugers.

Yeah, I'll splurge the ten bucks for the letter, I gotta know more… thank you!

And thanks for the link too.

Based on Ruger's site, the serial number appears to show up under a .22 magnum but not as a .22lr?
Ruger's dates of manufacture list that shows Magnum Single-Sixes through 1973 is erroneous. There are no Magnum only Single-Sixes known after 1964.
Look under the "Single-Six Standard Model" listing. The dates of manufacture there are actually the same.

I don't know what I'm missing, but the pictures shown are of a 5 1/2 inch bbl revolver, right?

note, he added ( edit) his post at the top and said he remeasured the barrel, and found out it is indeed a RSS5, and needs to find out if it did come with a spare cylinder, thus making it an RSS5 X......get the letter we say;)

I have an extra Mag cylinder. Bought a gun in a pawn shop once with both cylinders Mag! Very clean and no ring. Numbered 326 on front. If you are interested give me an offer. Over all cylinder length is 1.62" star to front extension. Don't know what a fair value would be. Sure some of these Guru's would.

Hello MarkB,
I'd be interested in that Mag Cylinder if it's Stainless Steel.
I don't know what my OAL is presently.
I expect to have my Super Single Six in hand by Tuesday of next week.
Please advise.
TY,
I'll offer you $ 85.00.

Have been on this forum in the past. Just rejoined and rules may have changed. If offering something for sale is inappropriate outside of the classified section, I apologize. Please, somebody let me know.
