I just put money down on a used colt new frontier 6 inch with 22 lr and 22 mag. anyone have experience with these? how do they compare to the single six?
with thanks

OVER THE YEARS, I have had two of the COLT NF 22/22m pistols. Neither would shoot with any of my RUGER SINGLE SIXES in 4 5/8", 5 1/2", 6 1/2"[3], 7 1/2" and 9 1/2" and one had the wrong sights that bottomed out would shoot a foot high at 25 yards. They may be pretty but pretty is as pretty does IMHO. Both also had that silly ejector rod that looked for all the world like heavy guage wire.
Probably nothing more that luck-of-the-draw.
And so it goes...

Have my grandfathers colt frontier 62 in my safe and love it. Has that fake stag grips. New frontier must be a rework of that gun? Colts blueing on the frontier is so beautiful.what year is that new frontier?

A friend had one. For the two of us, at that particular time, it shot right along with my Single-Six. Someone with more experience than either of us had at the time might have been able to do better with one or the other.

I always thought the little Colt was "smaller" than my Ruger, and felt that way, particularly in the size and configuration of the grips.

It was pretty neat, and I rather wish I had one just for the sake of comparison when "the guys" gather.

Just for reference, here is a picture of my Ruger Single Six (with 22 magnum cylinder installed) and my Colt New Frontier .22. I haven't shot the Colt much so I can't comment on how it compares with the Ruger as far as accuracy, etc.

got a bearcat today too!
Hope yours is as nice as the one I got a year ago.

My first one was in '66, from J.C.Penny, for $39.95. Sold it twenty years later for $200. Spring of last year I got a new stainless one THAT IS A GEM! Now either my memory has gone, or the new one is significantly better than my first one. Very nice trigger, accurate as all get out, and just plain out fun to shoot.

Hope your is also a gem! 8)

I've had a New Frontier 6" for many years. It IS prettier than a Single Six, but shoots about like my 6 1/2" "Liberty" Single Six, except that for some reason it REALLY likes .22 WRF better than .22WRM (one of my Smith .22WRMs does too).

But I shoot my Single Six a LOT more than the Colt 1) because the Colt was in near-mint condition and my SS was somewhat comfortably worn when I got it, 2) because the SS is easier to fix and can safely carry 6 shots, and 3) the sights on the SS are sturdier. The Colt's .22LR cylinder has never been fired nor fitted; it came virgin and I've left it that way--I mostly shoot .22WRM in these guns anyway.

BTW, my brother has a mint unfired 4 3/4" New Frontier that came with the WRM cylinder having only five chambers cut. Now there's a "safety measure": "load one, skip the one you couldn't load anyway, load four, let the hammer down on the chamber that isn't there"! Colt quality control of the 1970s.....

Neither of our New Frontiers has the later Mickey Mouse hammer block safety.

many thanks!
unfortunately, the LGS had a new employee who sold it out from under me (ok happens)
offering me a 1961 frontier scout with walnut grips for 235.00. Seems like a good deal except the finish does not seem as nice as the NF and when I turn the cylinder at least one cartridge hole easily moves out of alignment. probably going to pass

yep. had two bills down on the gun and someone forgot to put it aside. thankfully I keep receipts.

I bought a brand new Colt New Frontier Buntline in early '74. I had a real nice custom rig made for it, 2 sets of custom grips and liked it well enough I guess. Used the 22LR cylinder for tree squirrel hunting in the costal mountains of Central CA (it was deadly at kn ocking them out of tall Ponderosa Pines), and the 22MAG for CA ground squirrels in the mountain valleys. It was far more accurate with the 22LR than it was with the 22MAG. But... it's been long gone for over 15 years... and both my 1969 Ruger Old Model Single Six 5 1/2" 22MAG only and 1971 Old Model Super Bearcat are still here if that says anything.

The Colt is a nice little gun with a beautiful finish. I bought one new in the 70s. I don't have it anymore and sold it and a nice Single Six around the same time. I never replaced the Colt but I did buy a new Single Six. I vowed never to sell my Ruger rimfire ever again, that had to be 30 years ago.

My brother had a .22 lr Colt Buntline model that shot real well. A few years ago, I traded a rifle I had for a Colt Peacemaker in .22 lr. It shot horrible and I traded it off.

My wife bought me a new Colt NF in .22LR only in 1987 as a birthday gift. Must have been made on a Monday. Crooked front sight, not timed, and wouldn't always index for the next shot. Went back to the factory. They fixed the crooked/tilted front sight, but not the timing and indexing problem. Went back twice more, but never fixed. Because it was a present from my wife I decided to keep it. One day I took it with me gopher shooting. Boy, was it accurate. Killed a bunch of little critters with it over the years. I just have to make sure it indexes for the next shot. Yep, it's a pain, but with the way it shoots, it's worth the trouble.

Mine is the short barrel with only .22 LR, bought new in box in August 1987, though I suspect it had been around a while. Very accurate, but so nice I don't shoot it now. [Gun has the, to me, wartlike 'safety'.]

Hope yours is accurate, also.

Regards,

Dyson
