It all depends on what you want. I went for a middle of the road priced SA PX9151LP Loaded. It's used mainly for self defense at home and in the Jeep when out in the back country four wheeling. It does what I want it to do without adjustable sights, and all the other custom work the higher priced models have. After buying it, I realized a basic Mil Spec model or a lower priced one like the Tarus or RIA would have served my purpose for less $$$...

Go to this site for a lot of info ... http://forum.m1911.org/index.php?

I personally have an STI Escort in .45ACP. Excellant quality and a great carry. I wouldn't discount any of the other manufacturers, but I have had a great experience thus far with the people and firearms from STI.

Hey AZ, how you doing? Nice to see you posting here again.

I don't think we need a 'other guns forum', it is quite interesting how it all melds together here, this is my favorite place by far.

Yo Cheese... I see you, Rev and all the gang are still here burning up the keyboards!! Yeah, I just didn't want the mods to get ticked because I was contributing to an OT. But like you said, it all comes together.

Back to regular scheduled programming.... 8)

I gotta agree with "AZ". I've been looking at 1911s and the Springfield Loaded is the way I'm leaning. Retails in the $750 range around my neck of the woods. The Kimber is a nice piece but I personally have a hard time spending that much on a pistol.

Dan Wesson all the way. Best money you can spend without going (at least semi-) custom. Traditional design, excellent execution. The tightest production pistol I've ever shot. (Specifically not counting my FA 97 revolver...)

This is the Classic Commander Bobtail (CBOB):

The fact of the matter is that there are many good 1911s on the market these days. The 1911 is a known quantity, a very mature weapon system, and the market is very competitive. Bad 1911s don't survive in the market long these days. Almost anything you buy will be reliable and shoot well, or the maker will fix or replace it.

That said, take some time to figure out exactly what you want. Do you want a high-zoot gun with all the candy and gingerbread, or a more traditional looking gun? Full-size, mid-size (Commander), or compact? Full weight (all steel) or lightweight? Blued, stainless, other finish? Adjustable sights or fixed? Do you plan to concealed carry the thing, or just use it for sport, fun, and/or home protection?

Go to the newstand and buy one of the several "annual" magazines that have catalogs or "buyer's guides" in the back. There you can look at dozens of different makes and models of 1911s and see what catches your eye.

Once you've settled on the features you want on your gun, you can start comparing makers and their prices. Don't forget to check out the mfgrs websites, as some have so many different variants that no magazine or catalog could show them all.

When you get it narrowed down to a few possibilities, come back and ask about specific guns. There's a lot of experience here and we'll be able to give you more specifics then.

Hope this helps.

OK ... here's what I'd do ... absolutely no question about it.

I'd buy TWO. I'd get a stainless Springfield Milspec for about $600, which could serve as a beater/truck/carry gun, even though the MilSpec is hardly a beater. Then I'd get a stainless OR blued Colt Gold Cup for about $900 for strictly target use. I would definitely NOT get a $1500 gun that will be so pretty and fine that you won't even want to carry it (at least I wouldn't).

The MilSpec will give you a good, hardy functional design with excellent combat sights and a few functional upgrades like flared ejectiion port and beveled mag well. It also comes with the really nice crossed cannon grips shown above in AZO's Springfield Loaded. The Gold Cup will give you a revered Colt 1911, a whole bunch of upgrades, match grade accuracy, match grade adjustable sights, and a gun that all your buddies will drool over, especially if they shoot it. Gold Cups can easily shoot sub-3 inch groups out of the box at 25 yards, and lots better than that at 50 feet. Although I have the two guns I list in this post, and then some :D, if I had $1500 to spend MYSELF, this is what I'd do, even owning the two guns in question. You'll have the best of both worlds, rock solid carry reliability, and world class beauty and accuracy.

Think about it.

Yeah, it is. That would have to go if I owned it.

Replacement triggers are cheap.

Hey Snake, we gotta calm it down a little. Shouldn't be ganging up on Sam, he might report us to a mod or something ... :D

Even if replacement triggers cost $1000, it would STILL have to go LOL.

There's no way I'd be seen with a gun with a trigger like that ....

Yeah, I'd go with the JB Weld for sure, Snake ... even if you just squirted it in and let it dry, and didn't even paint it .... THAT I could live with .... at least it would look manly ....

You know? I never really cared for that trigger, but since that's one of my primary carry guns I've tried to avoid doing any mods to it. It works fine the way it is so I haven't felt any need to change anything.

Here's a shot of my old Colt, with my preferred trigger (long, solid, smooth face):
