China wins the first gold medal of the 2024 Olympics in mixed team air rifle shooting

China has won the first gold medal of the Paris Olympics, but its athletes were nowhere near Paris.

The Olympic shooting range, a three-hour drive from Paris in the city of Chateauroux, was the venue for Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao to shoot for gold in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event held Saturday morning.

Huang and Sheng opened up an early four-point lead against South Korea's Keum Jihyeon and Park Hajun in the head-to-head for the gold medal and stayed ahead from there to win 16-12.

I have five air rifles and two air pistols, certainly nothing like they use in competition. I have a 10 meter range in my basement. Surprising how accurate an air rifle can be. Once the farmers start taking off the crops that abut my property the mice come out and get in my barn. What I don't trap, I shoot with my airguns.

I have been a Air gun enthusiast for many years. Own many. Here is one interest little gun Baikal Mdl 60 AKA Little Black Russian. The odd thing about this little Spring rifle was that it is insanely accurate. Known for this. Just a great barrel and a 6 way adjustable trigger.
One fun thing I love to do is what I call "wind shooting". Take a slightly windy day, focus on the center vein of a leaf and wait for the perfect shot, when the leaf is perfectly still. I can spend hours doing this and I get so into it, the time feels like only 10 or 15 minutes.

"Shoot for gold". Wasn't everyone shooting for gold? Or does that expression imply that they won the gold? Or can it be either? I'm never going to understand English.

In a quick search, I understand that the US didn't even qualify for the finals?

Sad for a nation that used to be called a nation of riflemen.

I have a friend whose wife raises "show chickens", with all the feed scattered around the rats show up at night to inundate the chicken yard. He uses a very powerful air gun and thermal imaging scope to reduce the population. He says it is a great sport.
