I have 2 small saws...

16" Stihl MS 170
14" Echo CS 310

I've dome some looking online. Some of the hard shells look large and bulky and these saws are quite small.

Recommendations?

hard case
soft case
brands
other considerations

For power tools in general I tend to stick with the manufacturer's hard cases. I put some hard earned money into the tool and I try to take the best care of it I can. Also on the plus side is that the hard cases are often molded for a specific tool. They tend to hold the tool securely.

The case for my Stihl is well made and has lasted a good long time.

Build a good box, with dividers for gas/oil/sharpening stuff/bars and chain. Plastic molded garbage sucks, and holds nothing else a guy needs.....

I recently bought a tiny little 12" Stihl. They have a one size fits all case, that's way too big for this saw, that completely defeated the purpose of this tiny little saw. They didn't even have a bar sheath to fit, so I modified the length to fit my bar. So my tiny little saw with a shortened bar sheath rides in my truck on an oil absorbent pig blanket.

It would be easy to build a fitted box out of scrap plywood.

I'm still using the factory (plastic) case that came with my Stihl. I try and take good care of it because it fits the saw quite well.

I have an open top box as pictured above also have a sheath bolted to the
front Bumper of my atv made of wood. Stand the saw right up in it with a
bungie to hold it down. Nice for small jobs where you do not need a bunch of stuff.
Clearing a blow down in a trail for example. Do not forget your Chaps! ps
