But every single one had significant face trauma from the bag.

There should be a kill switch that the people can use to turn them off if so desired.
I had an angled front end collision with no deployment when there should have been in my opinion. Glad it wasn't up to me as that stuff is expensive and I pay out of pocket for repairs. Dumb I know but with five cars on the policy, I can't afford a claim making the price go up.

I had another angled front end collision in another car and both roof rails and the steering wheel bags deployed. Gave me a slight black eye but my neck felt way better the next day than the day after the non-deploy wreck. I had to replace both roof rail bags, steering wheel inflator and SIR coil, both front seat belt retractors, and both front seat belt pre-tensioners ... thank goodness the passenger side IP inflator didn't go off. Kept me from having to buy a dash too.

Insurance would have totalled both vehicles yet both vehicles are running and driving fine, no issues safety-wise. Slight cosmetic issues remain.

Airbags like seatbelts should be dealers choice. In my youth I worked quite a few TC's I saw the advantages of seatbelts, so I wear them. But I don't think the government should penalize anyone for electing not to.
But doesn't that go back to the insurance thing? What happens if I cause an accident and someone gets hurt because they elected to not wear their seatbelt or they turned off their airbag? May I elect to NOT pay their medical bills?
