Cap & Ball Revolvers

I've wanted a Ruger Old Army for a long time...but they are are way too pricey when you find a nice one.

I'm not too familiar with percussion revolvers. I have several black powder rifles both percussion and inline that I hunted with. But no revolvers, until yesterday. My Seabee Son was home on weekend liberty and we went to Sportsman Warehouse. They had several in the case. Mostly Pietta and Traditions. He has always had a interest in them so we took a look at a few. I ended up buying a Traditions 1858 Remington Army, made by Pietta. I didn't really research these much and bought this on a whim. They had a empty place where a Pietta 1858 was, and it was $90 cheaper than the Traditions/Pietta. looking it up they are exactly the same. The one I bought had a Traditions box, but all Pietta paperwork and says Pietta on the revolver.

So why the $90 price markup on the Traditions/Pietta over the Pietta? The gun counter Associate's stated something about Traditions hand picks better quality revolvers and distributes them? Doesn't sound feasible for Traditions. I wish the Pietta was there so I could have compared them. It is a very nice looking revolver. Fit/finish and over all quality seems very good.

Anyone have information?

I was researching cap and ball supplies for my newly acquired Pietta 1851 Navy Yank and Traditions was like $3 higher for round balls than other suppliers.
Both my Pietta and Uberti .36 cal 1862 Police were purchased used.

I have a couple 58 Remys somewhere around here. I believe one is a Uberti and the other a Navy Arms but won't swear to it. I preferred the top strap on the Remys, they just seemed more durable and were easier to clean, for me at least. Wherever they are there is a conversion cylinder too.

I've always heard that Pietta kept closer to the older models in looks without the extra costs, while being very well built.

My dad has a couple Pietta's from back in the late 60-early 70's. He's been gone about 20yrs now and mom now has them in the gun safe. One is a 36 Navy(?) and the other is a longer barreled model that I believe is based on the "Old Army" style in 44 cal I believe. They were both sweet shooters when I shot them in my teen years back then.

He was a machinist and self taught gunsmith in the area and amateur trap shooter, so he got to know many guns and which had better reliabilities than other gun makes. He also built a couple custom Springfield 03's into some beautiful sporter rifles my mom has and won't give up.

I recently traded into a Ruger Old Army 5 1/2 " bbl. fixed sight blue. I would like to know the Model number and possibly value.

Cap and ball sixguns are a lot of fun, a long time ago I bought this pair of ROA ‘s and also this Colt 1851 Navy 2 nd gen
