Been there a while. Rusty chain and seat stem.

Look again. There is no chain. What you see is s long stick.
Sorry, but follow your advice. You can see the chain coming from the top of the crank back to the rear, down the derailleur back to the bottom of the crank.
Really!? Wow! Well, since you took the pic, you would know best. Rusty stick, maybe?
I'm trying to figure out if someone has taken parts or tried to take parts off the bike.... the front sprocket is not right and even though you can take the front wheels off of most bikes with ease I'm thinking what is left is some kind of lock? Here's some closer views.
Front sprocket is not a single gear. There are three more smaller gears behind the large sprocket. (3 or 4 smaller sprockets)
