I use the Vivaldi browser (Chrome based) on my PC which is much like other modern browsers with "plug in" features or extensions to tailor make a web "experience" to my liking. Vivaldi also has some built in features such as privacy tools to block third party cookies, and trackers that I like.

Anyway, a few plugins that I really like are the adblocker, java script enable / disable, gif blocker, and the autoscroller.

Adblocker... they H-A-T-E this one and almost beg me to disable it, nope I push on to another of the many sites with the same content. cmdMD Recovery

Java script disabler... If I get an annoying popup this one will disable java script and more often than not I'll have access to the full content of the site minus autoplay videos which I won't suffer through anyway.

Gif blocker... Dancing elephants, screaming Karen, and other banal expressions of the author go bye-bye.

Autoscroller... Pressing the scroll wheel will let the user scroll down the page hands free.

Unfortunately many of these plugins are not currently available for mobile users until / unless the governments of the world do something to inhibit the web designers from pushing all sorts of clever coding and bloatware on us.

Sorry, I retired from a ginormous computer company and I erroneously think everyone knows basic online skills.

In short if your main internet access is through a mobile device, it's meaningless as you have few avenues to stop intrusion into your online "experience".

If on the other hand you use a computer these are ways to streamline and privatize your online "experience"

Also, if you use a PC or Mac and are unfamiliar with these browser features you likely do not mind being distracted by annoying website interruptions and they're meaningless :)

Ok,, I'm computer stupid.

But,, if I read this correctly,, you can get stuff to put on your computer,, such as "adblocker" and it helps screen unwanted ads?
Questions;
Does it cost anything to get this?
Is it easily installed?
What are the drawbacks?

I'll do my best.

It doesn't screen ads, it BLOCKS them entirely, and you can choose to see the content of the page, or (like me) go elsewhere.

Wayyy back there was one browser called Netscape Navigator which morphed into Mozilla, then Firefox. Firefox was an historical (to me) advancement in web browsing because it had user customizable features that other browsers like Chrome and later Vivaldi adapted to their products with "Extensions" The extensions are free and easily added to the browser and they add functionality to the browser that made the internet more usable.

So if you have Chrome, Vivaldi or any of the offshoots of chrome (see link) you have a slew of FREE browser add on extensions to make your online presence more (IMO) tolerable by virtue of not having to deal with some of the nasties that web developers came up with.

The chrome webstore is the repository for all free Chrome based web browsers.

As far as dwarbacks go, I never found one since my first Firefox install many years ago.

Ok, I use Firefox as my normal home page. And when I want to look something up on the web,, I use "startpage" or "duckduckgo" So if I understand what you are sharing,, what I'm doing isn't good?

Since you're using FF investigate the areas I marked. The puzzle piece leads you to plugin features the three lines are the FF customization areas.

Only problem I find is folk will post links, usually to news sites, and the demand you turn off your ad blocker. I just move on.
Unfortunately, when it comes to my banking site, benefits page, and most of my on line bill sites I have to turn it off for at least that transaction. I'm using the Brave browser, Ghostery, and Ad Block. Ad Block kills the ads on You Tube (this week) and makes that site useable.

Thought I was pretty good at computer stuff, but something changed about a month ago, and the iPad 1 that I use in the reloading room wouldn't load anything, just gave errors (stream not available). Looks like it's connected to the same network it's been connected to, and that network still works with other devices, but I also tried to open a few websites on Safari and they no longer will open.
I do like Firefox on my other devices, so thanks for the tips posted above.

Same. Couldn't get online bill pay to work through my bank yesterday and finally figured out how to change "strict" to "normal" and it all worked. I put it back to strict when I was done. I could log into the bank site and look at the accounts, etc. but could not open bill pay.

What a lot of (most?) people don't realize is that many ads are dynamic. You load a page and the hosting site links to another site that auctions the ad space instantaneously and then loads the high bidder's ad to your browser. Any company pretty much can bid on the ad space, including nefarious actors with malware embedded in the ad.

Happy Browsing!
Tom
