'tis a TALO model isn't it?

Ah, and therein lies the confusion.
The TALO gun is a stainless 4-5/8" .44 Special.
the 4-5/8" .41 Mag flattop is blue gun and it is Williams's...the mate to the 6-1/2" .41 flattop that made all the waves a few months ago.

Time to start collecting NM Flattops boys! There are already 10 different models (and am hearing rumors of a couple more coming). As limited as some of these are, you'll never be able to find some of these models in a few years. Now would be a good time to start your set.

Give Williams Shooter's Supply a call for the 4-5/8" gun.

Now, time to let go of some other info. The 4-5/8" .41 flattop was originally called the model S458N-41 (Ruger model 0869). Ruger built five of these, apparently all inspected on 12/16/2009. Ruger shipped one as an "acceptance" gun to Williams and then shipped the other four to them sometime later. All five of these are serial numbered 87-81576 to 87-81580. Our sn 87-81577 just came by UPS today!!!! :D

In early March, Ruger emailed Williams to let them know there was a serial number issue with the model (somebody at Ruger finally figured out that the 87- prefix was for a Super Blackhawk....and these .41 Mag. flattops sure ain't Supers!!). The email stated that any guns produced from there on out would be called the model BN-414L (Ruger model 10408) and would have 48- prefixes like all NM .41 Blackhawks have. I have heard that there have been somewhat over 80 of the 48- prefixed guns received so far.

No need to call Williams for an 87- prefix gun. They are gone.

Chad,

What are the 10 NM flattops? I thought this was going to be an easy set to put together! I have 3, the 357 anniversary, 44mag anniversary and the 6.5" 41 mag. What else do I need to complete this set other than the newest 4-5/8 Blackhawk. ANd the 2 bbl lengths in 44 special.

1. 50th Anniversary .357 flattop
2. 50th Anniversary .357 flattop, gold edition (1 of 500)
3. 50th Anniversary .44 flattop (there are three variations of this...89- prefix, 870- prefix with rollmark on side of barrel and 870- prefix with rollmark on bottom of barrel.
4 and 5. Lipsey's (now Ruger) .44 Special 4-5/8" and 5-1/2" (Variations include large and small NEWPORT).
6 and 7. Lipsey's .44 Special 4-5/8" and 5-1/2" Bisley (all should have small NEWPORT).
8. Williams 6-1/2" .41 flattop (two variations...those in the 87-79xxx range have a NEWPORT address with large "NEWPORT" and everything so far noted in the 87-80xxx range and higher have a small NEWPORT).
9. Talo stainless 4-5/8" .44 special flattop.
10. Williams 4-5/8" .41 flattop (variations with 87- prefix or 48- prefix serial number).

Here's some current production information:

#1 = About 16,000.
#2 = 500.
#3 = About 21,400 total (includes 3,400 89- guns with rollmark on side of barrel, about 1,200 89- guns with rollmark on bottom of barrel and 16,800 guns with 870- prefix).
#4 and #5 = Slightly over 1,500 of each, but Ruger's production of these two models will increase those numbers a little bit....(I suspect Ruger won't be able to sell these in the quantities dispersed by Lipseys).
#6 and #7 = Initially 250 of each, and that may be it unless orders continue to flow into Lipsey's (I.M.O., I don't expect there to be to many more than that as a final number of each).
#8 = 300+. Unless a flurry of orders comes into Williams for this one, there may be no more.
#9 = I haven't heard what the total on this one is supposed to be, but I also expect this one to be limited....500 or less?
#10 = Only 88 so far (only five were made with an 87- prefix). But I do expect Williams order with Ruger to go up on this model as everybody has now learned about it.

So....about half of the 10 models produced so far have a production of 500 units or less. What's not to like about collecting these????

Something else....if Ruger continues to not show these distributor exclusives on their website....better for the collector, eh?? To bad for the distributors though.

Ok, my mistake. I knew of the initial 5 and was told more would ship "in a week or two". That was a month or so ago. Didn't follow up when I talked to them again. Also knew - brain farted - the stainless one was TALO. Me bad. :(

As Always, THANK YOU Chad! #9 and #10 are next for me then at least I'll be halfway there. That seems to be a theme with me, get halfway there and the rest climb above my price range, Oh well that's while I'll never be more than a simple accumulator. I'm not giving up on this set though it's just gonna take me longer than I thought. At least I stopped bidding on the penny auction Emilio Zapata Vaquero on GB this past week. I was just bidding since the price was so low. Again that's for the quick spot on reply!

Chet I have a 87 prefix 41 with the model number S-416n on the label. If you remember I asked you on the forum about the 87 prefix.

Yes, all 300+ 6-1/2" .41 Mag flattops (S416N) that are in existence right now have an 87- prefix. And, every one of these were also given "out-of-sequence" serial numbers. They were made before Ruger caught their error.
If Williams has any more fo them made I presume that they will also have 48- prefixes.

Mike,
Are they Medium (357) or Large (44Mag) cylinder frames?

Pete

They are on the larger .44 flattop type cylinder frame...just like the 6-1/2" .41's that Williams had.

Hey Chad,

Quick question...do you consider the cased, match pair of 50th Anniversary Blackhawks as a separate variation or not?

A great question and I've been pondering that for a while. I believe Ruger kept the same catalog numbers and model numbers on each of those to make the set....no different catalog number for the pair.
Myself, we never put a pair away because they weren't "technically" any different....but to each his own on that.
And anyway, we received 520-00023 and 870-00023 when the models first came out in 2005 and 2006, but don't have the two-gun case for them....they just weren't shipped as a pair.
