Hi Guys,
Is it necessary to disassemble the grip frame from the cylinder frame in order to replace the hammer spring?

What is the way to remove the hammer strut from the grip frame? I cocked the hammer and installed a pin on the hammer strut, then released the hammer. But I was unable to remove the strut from the side of the frame.

Thanks in advance!

I don't have ONE Ruger that I've ever been able to "wiggle out" the mainspring without removing the grip frame.

I know one can make a clearance cut at the upper portion of the grip frame so the spring can be removed but I've not tried that technique.

Besides, I can remove a Ruger grip frame faster than it took me to type this reply..... :)

Anyone have a comparison photo that shows this mod?

I've never had one I couldn't. ;)

Sometimes you need to be a little forceful, or use a screwdriver to get the spring seat/shoe up and over.

Don't put in a lighter main spring.

The older vaqueros I have some can be replaced without taking the grip frames off and also both of my new vaqueros I can take out without dissasembling the grip frames but my blackhawks will not let me. I too had rather take them apart than to bend or grind my frames for easy removal. Just a thought..

I feel better now that I've never been able to take the mainspring out of a Ruger single action revolver just by removing the grips, capturing the spring and pulling it out the side. I thought I had discovered something else I wasn't very good at doing.

OK, back to the original topic........

Why do you want to replace the spring? is it broken, damaged, or what?

Whimpy mainsprings don't belong on "belt guns", period.

JMHO, and no offense aimed at the CAS crowd where seconds count.

Out in the woods I like a gun that will fire.
