Black rifles on magazine shelves?

From the shelves, you are more likely to get wanna be gun gurus, advertiser preferences, etc. You might look for a used firearms books by Ian Van Hoog (sp?), some of the Gun Digest take down books or it might be a better use of your time to scan You Tube! Remember: most are subjective, not objective.

You might have been better to simplify your query with a "Where can I learn more about...." question. Also, order free catalogs from suppliers! ("Dream Books" or "Wish Books")

Sorry if I was abrupt but so many times people can get their answer by a simple Google or Yahoo search! Forum members(not just here but other forums as well)want other members to do everything for them!

I think there was a bit of mis-communication in this thread. The OP was asking about finding actual magazines on book racks for sale in stores.
I don't think he was lazy or whatever because he didn't do an internet search for what he was seeking.

In my opinion,, I took it to mean he wanted to get an actual magazine or more that he could look at to see if it held his interests.

We all know the internet is full of stuff. And yes,, an internet search can reveal more info or data than any gun rag could imagine. I think Bear Bio thought a totally different direction because he uses the internet for his research, knowledge or studying purposes.

I do think his phrase; "Always amazes me at how computer illiterate (or lazy) members are!" may have been a bit blunt & even harsh in how it was worded.
I constantly tell folks; "I'm computer stupid" because I do not understand how a lot of computer stuff works,, or how to do many things on these modern gizmos. And I'm not alone. I know a few folks who do not even own a computer. And I also know a lot of people who are much worse in their computer skills than I am,, (and that's a lot!) Heck,, Miss Penny uses a computer a WHOLE lot more than I do,, and can do stuff that amazes me. Yet,, one thing she doesn't do is anything to do with posting pictures. I learned to do that long ago. But I rely upon her to fix me screw-ups when I have computer issues.

But a good example of differing views is how Miss Penny & I approach any form or research. She'll google-fu everything. I never use google. I do use a different site to do any type of search,, for a very specific website,, that doesn't track or store my info.

But the OP is a lot like me & others. We want an actual printed magazine or book & not the internet.

Having been here for a while,, and conversed with Bear Bio enough, or followed his postings,, I do not think he's an elitist or anything that may have been suggested about his attitude. I just think he may have been thinking differently w/o the realization of a different viewpoint. And as I said,, maybe his wording could have been differently to avoid the harshness of it.
He's never struck me as a "negative" type of personality or anything like that.

But I readily admit that I prefer to try & find a lot of printed stuff vs using the internet for everything myself. I'm a bit old school, and I understand a book or magazine. Often,, when I search for something,, the stuff on the internet is NOT what I'm seeking. And I know it's likely because I may not be wording something correctly to get the results I seek.
And the internet.. well,, it's only got whatever someone else has entered into it.

So again,, I truly feel there was a real mis-communication in the way this thread was presented & approached.

I feel the magazine companies are trying to ditch the paper and do online subscriptions. I prefer the paper mags for reference as is justified by my hoard filling up several boxes. I don't trust the online sub, unless you download each one, that they will delete it after time like they have with previous info.

Youtube is your friend and it's free. Lots of channels some of which are great, good and BS. After you watch a number you will determine which are worth watching. I don't find reading mags. very useful. Probably never was but prior to the internet that was about all there was.

Unfortunately, Multnomah County Sheriff is the only one who would issue a Non-Resident CCW to a WA resident. On that trip, it resembled Third World countries I've been in. Homeless camps, pan handlers/beggars (always been a Portland problem but worse now!), armed security in stores & trash everywhere.

We used to go to Portland quite regularly. It was always a fun family outing. But in the last several years it has become a cesspool and I don't even like driving through it. It has to be a special event to get me to go even close.

As far as the OP's question- I have found that there are stores that have removed most all gun magazines from their shelves. They still have hunting and outdoors magazines, but no firearm specific mags. I guess it depends on the political leanings of the corporate office. Sad situation to say the least.

I will offer a bit of advice. I'm sure there are those who disagree- but this is my personal experience. I absolutely love piston driven systems vs direct impingement. I have built several rifles using the Adams Arms system. They run smooth and cool, and there is minimal cleaning needed. A factory piston system would probably be the best place for someone new to the platform. Also- the Radian Raptor charging handle is hands down the best on the market. Again, personal preference. And Aero Precision makes great parts. Never had an issue with them.

Here's my 2 "Keepers". Top is a lightweight 14.5 piston gun. Bottom is an 18" tack driver

I respectively disagree: I prefer a direct impingement. I have an Ruger AR556. Hated both the M-16 and subsequent AR-15 with pistons. I agree a direct impingement (recoil operated?) is the best choice maybe for the average person who doesn't shoot alot and tinkers on his AR platform. I tinker with my single actions.

41Dude I understand your search for information. I have been researching AR-15's again recently myself. I honestly don't know what is available on grocery store or drug store shelves. I have been using questions to search the internet but my focus has not been completely manufacturer specific. I was looking for what are the advantages of a chrome lined barrel vs. nitride or stainless. Is 9310 superior to Carpenter 158 for a bolt carrier group, and so on. Using the internet for research you always have to filter out a certain amount of noise but I believe one always has to do that with gun magazines also.

They are great weapons, and I know it- but I am so completely burned out on the platform that if I never saw another one it would be too soon. BTW, here's a fun fact: I live in NJ, and the state has no problem with the AR-15, EXCEPT if it has the Colt name on it. Go figure....

Boy tough crown here. I also hate it when an answer can be retrieved googlie quicker than posting a question. But since I love to googlie I often will look things up for posters simply because the question interests me as well.

Nevertheless.......I too lament the fact that many magazines are no longer with us, and many of the rest are simply ads or stories by writers who don't have a clue.

B&N used to sell Shotgun News, but not any more. I hated to buy a subscription because every week was the same. Only wanted one every few months. (yeah, name change now) Other than that, all the local bookstores have closed.

Back in 1971 I was on my way home from a boat dealer after just having ordered a new boat. I stopped in a drugstore for something and noticed a Trailer Boats Magazine on the stand. It was Vol 1, Issue 1. What caught my eye was the cover photo of the very same boat I had just bought. I was a charter subscriber and have every single copy they ever published. They folded about 15 years ago. I have every year's index cataloged for future reference. So, if anyone wants specs on a 1974 Whatchamagigger outboard I have the info.

I always wanted an AR, but the prices were simply more than I wanted to pay. Then I was out of state and got to use the one my son had bought. Slick. Now gotta have one.

Some googling and I found videos on how to build one...legally. Kits were reasonably inexpensive. At the next gun show I found a decent stripped lower for 80 bucks, brand new. A PSA kit and I was in business for less than $500.

But a problem....
I couldn't decide on red dot or peep and blade. Off to the next gun show and now I have both.

Bottom line is that I ended up spending the same amount that local dealers wanted, but of course I got two...

Sir, one thing you need to remember about any article or You Tube film is that it is the opinion of the one doing the film or writing the article. And, opinions are like a certain body part. Everyone has one. Basically, they are all built the same. The difference is in the quality of the parts they use in making them. My favorite ones are Aero, Stag, Spikes, S&W and Ruger. You can get some great AR's for under $1000.00 The one thing I change on all of mine is the trigger. Most factory triggers are like dragging a log chain through a knot hole. You can get a great trigger for under $200.00.
