Billiards anyone?

Help Support Ruger Forum:

I always thought 'billiards' was what snooty people called pool.
Well son you thought wrong :) :) :) :)
Same here. Guess I learned something. 😀
Kevin,
Glad you learned something from us Gray Dogs;)
When you live in a small town of 835 with no swimming pool or movie and one bar that has two regulation pool tables and sells hamburgers. Well guess where us kids spent our time. 25 cent burgers and 10 cents a rack pool tables. The Dads were into playing Pinochle, so it left the tables to us. Later moved to a town of 4500 with a fore real pool hall with billiard and pool tables but no burgers so had to go next door for a burger:)

Interesting. My daughter's high school has 800 students. Sometimes we drive through one of those small towns and always wonder what people do for fun. I guess that's a different topic altogether.

And Pinochle! Don't get me started. Hate the game...

Played a lot of bar pool in my 20's.
Typical bet was a buck or a beer, and I wasn't any better
past that.
Just did a door repair at the local pool hall in town.
They have about 12-14 tables and 6 dartboards and do Leagues and
Tournaments
Owner said the hot item is graphite sticks at 1000.00 a pop.
They post a gunslinger board on he wall where you can challenge
anyone listed for their spot.
I have an old McDermitt stick I found at a flea market.
Got me thinking if I can still use the thing.
Called a buddy about getting together this or next week to
put in a little table time.
We will see what a bad back, bad shoulders and weak eyes
does to my game.
I suspect it won't be pretty.

.

These are just what isn't stored in the attic yet. Grew up with both pool and ping-pong tables, and have been playing pool since I was around 5. Finally got tired of the leagues, but still play elsewhere.

I enjoy playing it but not very good, plus I don't play often enough to maintain the skill I once had. My eye/hand coordination ain't much. No chance of being very good.

A friend has been the bank shot pool world champion at least twice & told me that he could help me considerably. I told him not to waist his time.

I have some good memories of my brother in law and I playing pool at his house great times

Billiards is some good stuff I love it , first time I ever saw a snooker Table I wanted one . Don't play much any more, but I like watching the championships

I haven't played seriously in years. A lot of years. When first dating my Wife he Father had a table and we'd play at family get togethers. He wouldn't allow any gambling. He and I smoked everyone every time in 8 ball and sometimes 9 ball. We had to call our shots, the others we would allow to keep whatever they knocked in.

My buddy who I coached football with from the time our Sons were 5 until high school has a table. Played a couple times but never really found my groove. Probably my lower back issue.

When I was in the 5th grade my Father bought a pool table. We shot a few games every night after dinner, and then sometimes a game after my homework was finished. He learned to play as a youngster in England, and then when they came over here he played in bars up until his time in Army/Korea. Mom said he would play now and then but stopped when my oldest sister was born. He was so good he would play us with a broom stick and still smoke us. I wish I still had all the sketches he drew for me as a reference for cue ball English and the diamonds. He was very technical about the way he taught me, and my older Brother.

I played a lot in the Navy. There was a pool table every where it seemed. I played in a couple bar leagues, both shooting pool and throwing darts.....some of the tourneys went until closing time.....I may or not have been staggering a little bit a few morning musters.....

A billiards table has no pockets, pool does.

Anyway I grew up playing straight pool. Pop belonged to a men's club that had a pool room, and my best friend had a table.

I still play once in a while with my son but the 8 ball and 9 ball crowd got to him and he prefers 8, and 9 over straight pool.

Friend in middle school had one in his garage so we played all summer two years. That was about it other than Sunday nights after church at the bowling alley.

Shot a bit in my "drinking years". Never great but could hold my own. My eldest son (now deceased) was a WHIZ on the table. I wouldn't shoot him because I didn't like being beaten so badly. I remember being in Waldorf MD and watching a 16 year old girl whip out a bunch of 'loud talking, macho' guys; one after another. Laughed quietly as it unfolded.

As mentioned above, my wife and I spent a lot of time playing pool in the early days of our relationship. I was reminded of a time, before we were serious or exclusive, my wife was out with a guy at "our" bar. Normally, I would have just ignored her and him, and she would ignore me if I was out with someone else. This time though, the guy was a big time, loud mouthed, braggart on the table. I decided to feed him some "humble pie", so walk over, set my quarter on the table and waited.

As soon as it was my turn, I racked 'em, he broke 'em, then I proceeded to run the table. Guy never got another shot off. I set down my stick, gave him back the table, and as I was walking by my (now) wife, I told her' "if I cannot be your date, I am going to beat your date."

45 minutes later she was back at the bar without the loser and the rest is history. 18 years later, still married, and still going strong.

Whilst in college I worked 4 to Midnight shift on the weekends. After work, several of us would head over to the closest tavern and play Pool and Billiards while consuming Boilermakers until closing time at 2:00 AM. Fun times
