Behind the neck or over the head?

I have two pair Howard Leight over the head electronic muffs. When wearing a hat, the seal between muffs and head isn't always that good.

I've been looking at the Sordin Pro-X behind the neck muffs. Are they a superior design/brand for hearing protection in a hunting scenario?

A common complaint about hearing protection.

In USPSA competition,, we are required to wear hearing protection,, and most of the people wear some form of electronic hearing protection. It's to allow us to protect our ears AND hear range commands.
Add in that many of us wear some type of hat,, it can create an issue at times.

If you wear a ball cap,, in general,, not a big issue. Other types of hats,, I see all kinds of innovative approaches to wearing the "ears" and having them work.

Dillon has/had a type of non-electronic ear muffs, that went behind the head,, and the wire frame was basically at neck level. Great for not getting interference by going over the top of the head.

BUT,, what is the real problem,, is that ANY type of ear muff,, that encloses the ears,, sticks up to where a hat doesn't sit in it's normal position on the head. The hat hits the muffs.

Many of us use a "sweat cover" over the ear cups,, and it's softer,, and allows a better seal. A ball cap is probably the best hat design for using muffs.

But if using a different type of hat,, it can be a problem. What I've seen many use,, is a set of custom ear plugs,, that fit in the ear, AND work the same way the electronic muffs work. Basically, electronic plugs.

I'm not familiar with the Sordins you mentioned,, so I can't help there. I can only offer what I've seen & experienced.

"for hearing protection in a hunting scenario?"
I understand that some feel the need for this. The only time I use hearing protection while hunting is if/when I use one of the 'rifle cartridge handguns' while deer hunting. I can't imagine the handicap wearing ear muff hearing protection would create :devilish: . My fumble foot Elmer Fudd(ish) brother-in-law tried this a couple decades ago so his hearing was 'damaged' while upland bird hunting. Great for me as he had no clue as to if or where a bird might have flushed so I got most of the easy close range shots.
Most of my current hunting rifles are hearing safe so no longer an issue. For 'range use' I prefer in the ear protection.

I'm not a hunter anymore (been almost 50 years) but from what I understand with the right hearing protection while hunting this can be an advantage. Electronic hearing protection, at least the good ones allow you to adjust the volume of the speakers regardless of the level of external sounds... otherwise not only loud sounds like a gun shot but also very faint sounds ... like a critter moving through the woods.

Last year I spent far more than I should have on some highly advertised devices that were supposed to do what Blume described with an 'in the ear' profile/size. They didn't and the 'manual' noise reduction mode button was too small for a normal person to find and press while in the ear. I see the box they came in lying on the back corner of my desk at this moment. :poop:

About the only time I wear a baseball style cap is when I am shooting. Sometimes just no hat. I put EAR foam plugs in and wear electronic protection. No problem then.

I have the behind-the-neck sordins and can wear a ball cap, stocking cap and some sun hats/cowboy hats with them on. Very low profile and good electronics but the passive protection of sordins is lower than many muffs - my only complaint.

I wear hearing aids so ear muffs fit over them just ok so many times I just pull them out and use the electronic muffs and they are fine. I would like to find a good set of in the ear electronic "ear buds" that dampen the sounds of gun fire but then when away from it they amplify so I can hear normal talk. All of the ads for these types tout how great they work but I really wonder. If a company stood behind their claims and offered a "no hassle, full money back guarantee if they don't work for you/you don't like the way they work" then I might try them.

Iv'e seen a lot of ads for Axil hearing protection. I may try them some day. Foam plugs work great but you can't hear anything around you. The over-ear electronic style works great but they're bulky and cumbersome.

Have the Axil ear plugs, highly recommend them. Use them in conjunction with Sordin over the head muffs when shooting indoors.

Outdoors. the Axils work great. Good protection without the weight of muffs.

My next pair of muffs will be behind the neck. Just so any hat can be worn.
