Have a well worn (slightly abused) Single Six I bought in new in 1976. Lots of rounds and dry firing, fanning and cylinder spins in the late 70's. I know, I know, but hey, I was 16 when I got her.

Pawl's well chewed, gate's become super tight over the years, and the cylinder latch pops up almost immediately now days. Figured I need to replace the cylinder latch assembly, gate detent spring and pawl for starters.

I was wondering what else ought to be replaced during an overhaul like this. Cylinder spring. pawl spring, etc.?

I've been looking at the Brownell's site, hoping there was a parts kit for something like this but didn't see one.

Thanks for any advice,

Jim

Greetings, Jim!

Ruger parts are cheap. Get one of "everything" and see how that works. What I mean is get a new pawl and pawl spring. The gate spring probably has a "burr" on it's tip.

The "hammer plunger" is what time's the dropping of the cylinder latch onto the cylinder. It's "timing" can be slightly adjusted via filing on the plunger's "notch section". One can fabricate a new plunger that is longer and totally eliminate the "ringing" of the cylinder, as well.

as Flatgate says get the parts, they are pretty reasonable and easy to find.....me I'd "detail" clean and inspect" bet you'll find the innards are gummed, sludged, etc ( turns to shellac in time) free up the hammer plunger, and the spring may need to be deburred most likely as said above......I'd worry more about the 'slots' in the cylinder, how bad of shape they are in if it was "spun & slammed, a LOT...."
We had one that was "gone" as far as the owner "thought"...soaked it in kerosene for a day or two, blew it out with an air hose ,lubed it all up, and wiped off the "excess" and with out taking the gun apart, it worked 100% BETTER.........................
as for the "chewing " of the pawl, easy replacement, I'd worry about the ratches of the cylinder....again, even a newer replacement cylinder can be found...................
can always plead "ignorance" and send it in to the factory, for an "appraisal" and rebuild if it needs it...seen folks go that way too...after all, they built it in the first place, and would know just what to change............
if it is a "true" 1976 gun ,marked 'Made in the 200th Year of American Liberty" it would be worht having it 'restored'...we've doen a few ourselves over the years and they came out "as new or better"......

Flatgate and Dan,

Thanks for the input, I was leaning towards replacing all the screws and plungers, and if I go that way will get one of everything.

After looking at the cylinder, the notches and the ratchet are pretty well beat, and the chambers are peened too. Blue's worn everywhere as well.

Might be best to send it back to Ruger. It does have the 200th roll mark. First gun I ever bought, been feeling guilty over its condition for years.
