Barrel longevity for a Ruger P89

Help Support Ruger Forum:

In 1985 it was determined that a preponderance of the 1911/1911A1 in use with the US Army had at least 1,000,000 rounds fired in each of them. All had been through the armories several times for rebuild/parts replacement/refinish since the Second World War, that was 42 years, some of the 1911 pistols had been in service for 74 years.
Call me skeptical. Can you cite a source for this? I spent much of the last 50 years working on weapons for the Army, and I am extremely doubtful about the figure cited. I doubt if many/most of those pistols have fired over 1,000 rounds; and certainly not 10,000 or more. The handgun is a secondary weapon for 90% of the soldiers that are issued one, and might get fired once or twice a year, on the order of 50-100 rounds. A few might have been fired more often. Of course, this isn't 100% true across the board; a relative few were fired more often; a very few were fired a lot more often. They were primarily worn out by frequent (often careless) handling, disassembly and reassembly, and lack of care, in my experience. Most 1911s were assigned to officers, tankers, or MPs, not Delta Force. Even MPs don't shoot very often.

Well I am thinking the source was CMP, it was several years ago. Handguns used in various combat arms go through quite a bit of use in training. I can recall firing an M16 at least 160 times in 1970. If you look at the frame of a military Government Model you will find numerous stamps from arsenal rebuilds. Rebuilds indicate use/wear. Remember some of these pistols were used 74 years. I personally own Government models that have 23K of use and they aren't the only one I own and use.
