I think I have posted this before but I will repost. I am sick and tired of seeing my fellow gun owners in Illinois getting screwed.

This only applies to Illinois gun owners.

#1 You can buy magazines and gun parts directly from any out of state company or individual that wants to sell you those items. Today I saw a guy get told that he could only order a slug barrel for his Mossburg from a FFL dealer. Those living in the Chicago land area do have to worry about the different communities that limit mag capacity to 10 rounds.

#2 You are allow to purchase ammo from any out of state dealer willing to sell to you. Some companies like Cabelas, Buds Gun Shop and J&G Sales will require a photocopy of your FOID card and they will only ship to the address on the FOID card but they will ship. Most companies could care less about your FOID. Some companies like CDNN Investments will not sell ammo unless you hold an FFL in Illinois because they are scared of Chicago.

#3 Do not let anyone tell you otherwise, a FOID card is only an invention of the Great State of Chicago rammed down the throat of Illinois in 1968. You can walk into any gun store in all states except NY, MA and CA and purchase ammo while on vacation. You do need to have the card on your person if you wish to bring the ammo back into Illinois.

#4 You can purchase black powder firearms from any out of state dealer and or individual that is willing to sell to you (see #2).

In the past week traveling around the state I have seen someone lie telling a guy that Glock mags were $59.99 because of the Illinois FOID tax. Another man was told that he could only buy ammo from an FFL dealer in the state. Winchester 9mm was $49.99 at that dealer. My favorite was the dealer that told a man that the slug barrel for the Mossberg would have to have a special $50.00 registration fee (as per the state) over the already retail price of the barrel.

Please do not let some crooks screw you out of your hard earned money. Call the NRA help line if you have any questions. State Police loves it when dealers give out wrong information.

Yeah Illinois is nice state if they could build a wall around Chicago and ignore it and remove the crazies in Springfield.

Theres dishonest people in every state. Ive never had any problems around here, even during the Obama gun buying frenzy. I have had to show my FOID card in Wisconsin though to buy ammo.

It would be nice if you could bring a lawsuit and get all the BS from Chicago and the rest of the state removed. I will not even drive through your state, especially with a gun.

Its not as bad as you think. Lots of people hunt and shoot here. As long as you dont do anything crazy the cops wont hassle you. The worst part is all the developments alot of the good gun hunting land is gone. But because of that bow huntings getting real popular. Lots of Deer here.

I agree with the original post. It is very acurate.

I'm south of the capital and have had no problems like the ones you've mentioned. I've dealt with those merchants and they are following the law. I'd rather have them do that then refuse to sell me their product. If I run into any of them scammers, I would just tell them they are wrong and walk away. No problem. I haven't lost anything.

I also agree. I live in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. The FOID card is a real pain. Even here in the state, from one gun store to the next, they interpret the rules differently.

Examples: At GAT Guns, I can browse the used guns without showing my card, not so a Cabelas. One store in Libertyville wouldn't even let me in the door until I showed my card. I left in disgust.

Wal-Mart will not sell me ammunition unless the actual clerk taking my money has a FOID card themselves. The last time he tried to trick me. After studying the card for a very long time. He asked what my name was, just for verification. (The FOID has a picture just like a driver's license.)

Once at Cabelas, the clerk made me show my FOID to buy empty brass for reloading.

I think as Jman8182 says, away from Chicago, people think different. I was in Peoria last weekend, and the gun store treats the FOID as a minor nuisance, nothing more.

It is a frustrating system. Especially when there are so many different ways to interpret the actual "law."

I've been o.k. in most of the gunshops in Southern, Central and West Central Illinois. Especially if I've bought ammo or been through the door before.

Wally World, Cabellas, Dick's Sporting Goods and Gander Mountain can be a little weird on things. However, for the most part a lot of their employees aren't true "gun nuts" like the rest of us and may not understand the law.

I've actually had the 'doorman' at ther gun shows in Belleville ask to see my FOID card when paying admission!
After informing them that I'm a Missouri resident that hassle went away.... Many sellers at the show also ask for the FOID if you want to handle a firearm, all to purchase ammo.
I guess it's better to be safe than sorry, considering the socialist laws of the state, and some of their 'duly elected' (with the help of ACORN?) officials love of our sport! I just can't for the life of me comprehend why some of those bozo's keep getting re-elected....

None of the lovely senior ladies working the door at the Springfield, IL gun show asked for my FOID to get in. I didn't end up handling anything as I was looking for a very specific revolver. Saw one that was about double that over one I looked at on gunbroker the week before so I didn't bother pickin' her up.

In Illinois, there are about 4 different statutory sections that apply to the possession, storage and transportation of firearms and ammo. You really have to be up on things to keep from committing some infraction during hunting season or going to a gun show to sell or trade.

And having an out of state plate probably doesn't help if you get stopped on this side of the I-64 / 55 / 70 bridge.
