Living in northern Illinois, about 85 miles west of Chicago, we had hummingbirds show up about May 1st last year, but nothing yet this year. I was wondering if any Midwesterners have seen them yet this year.
Yes...just this week in North Central Ohio.....a little late? this year?

I had my feeder up and saw a few, but then we had the outside of the house and the deck being painted. I had to take down all of the bird feeders for what turned out to be a two week period. Now the feeders are up again but sadly I have not seen a single hummingbird yet. I don't know how long or if they will re-discover my feeder for them.

Between college and grad school, I helped teach a course in Tropical Ecology in Belize and Guatemala. Not a bird person but the birds were interesting> We have the Northern Mocking Bird in the US but I could tell the Southern Mocking Bird at a glance because of the similarities in flight. Anyway, I sw a Sabrewing (Largest hummingbird-about the size of a dove) and a Manakin (2nd largest=size of a small dove). You could hear the Sabrewing at 100 yards and the Manakin at 50. Not as pretty, though (although some species' males are spectacular, I only saw females)
