Now that Ruger is in the AR bidness, they should make a dedicated .22LR AR, but with a twist--with a lower receiver that is set up to take 10/22 magazines.

Not only would this allow the use of cheap, common, reliable 10/22 mags, especially hi-caps, but the lower would then truly be .22-only and would thus be legal in some places where ARs are restricted, such as Kali, Maryland, and maybe some other states.

This lower could be made of plastic. The product could be offered as a complete rifle, as a lower only for use with other .22 uppers, or as a stripped lower only.

This is such a good idea, I might try making one myself from scratch.

I think a conversion unit on the Ruger's base model AR would be nice.
Maybe somebody already does this for the AR? I'm not up on them so ???

There are all sorts of .22LR conversions for the AR being made. Some are drop-in bolt units, some are compete dedicated uppers, some are complete guns. There are several different mag systems being used, some of them proprietary.

My idea is a new lower that uses 10/22 mags. This would have the advantages I mentioned above.

As popular as the 10-22 assault looking conversions are, I think you're on to something here.

There's a lotta folks out there that would like one, but don't have the time, inclination nor the skills to build one from aftermarket parts.

Maybe a 22 mag version as well?

Well, that would require a completely new upper. And has anyone ever made hi-cap 10/22 Magnum magazines? I can't recall ever hearing of any.

I like the idea of a .22 semi-auto that uses an existing, standard magazine. Seems like you save a lot of design work if you start with an existing mag. It also means the gun will never end up as "safe orphan" without magazine.

While we're talking about Ruger products, I made a sketch of a modified .22 auto pistol, with the receiver extended back to take a wire stock, and forward to form a heat shield around a 16" barrel, with a vertical foregrip. It looks like a cross between a Sten and a Thompson. I kinda doubt Ruger would make it, but maybe an aftermarket company?
