Sad day. One more Old San Francisco tradition gone. I've enjoyed Anchor Steam since the late '60s, living here in SF. You could actually enjoy a beer at their little bar whilst watching the brewers at work at their copper kettles.
Steam beer is actually a variety of beer that had been brewed here since the 1860s. No more...

I drank a couple of AnchorSteam beers many years ago in the place in the pic...I thought it was good beer. SF has not been friendly to business as of late tho.

Well, it looks as though there is a venture capitalist who lives a couple of blocks up from Anchor who wants to purchase the works from Sapporo when everything goes up for sale, then start brewing. Even intends to sell shares (of course).
His name is Mike Walsh and he's another Anchor lover.
I sure could use a bottle of Anchor Liberty Ale right now...
We shall see.

nor have I.
Been out of the drinking game for 26 years, 1 month, 11 days.
Good for you for knowing the difference. My grandpa used to say that he didn't mind a man that took a drink but he didn't like it when the drink took the man.

On a lighter note, the last time I had lunch with a friend of mine at a craft brewery we were asked our opinion on one of their brews by the brewmaster. I told him that his horse needs dialysis!

Way over on the other coast I've never heard of it. Shame that the insane left killed another business in what once a great city.
Sounds like it was corporate greed. Big corp wants more profit after purchase so it rebrands the product to hopefully sell more. Could also just be a cultural thing where the big corp didn't understand how to add a small brand into their conglomerate.
Another problem has been Sapporo, the Japanese beer company that bought the brand in 2017. Employees complained to VinePair last month about Sapporo's alleged mismanagement and lack of understanding of craft beer in the United States. In addition, a 2021 rebrand of Anchor was criticized for pivoting too far away from the brand's classic look.
