I never get tired of talking ammo

How much SD or HD ammo do you keep compared to range ammo? Though I have just recently bought a new pistol, I have 25 rounds of HD ammo and 300 rounds of range ammo. When you compare the 25 rounds at almost a dollar a pop and the range at $10 per 50. So do you stock up for plinking or stock up for practice?

My ratio is pretty skewed because I shoot a ton of ammo at the range, about 75 to 1 (range to defense).

I have about 100 rds of defense ammo.

I was just thinking what I will buy next time I buy ammo for the 9mm, It will be 25 defense rounds and 200 range rounds, my goal is to have 100 defense rounds and 1000 range rounds on hand at all times and never go below that, and then if my buying passes my plinking I'll go on up to 1500 in reserve  :D :D

With a .45, what's the difference? You can buy some real expensive hollowpoint stuff that will probably expand, or just settle for a .45 hole all the way through.

I keep about 100 JHP of 9mm and about 250 FMJ on hand if I can. In .22LR I normally buy a new brick when I open the last one.

1K 9mm FMJ, 50 rd HP

600 .45 FMJ, 25 rd HP

2K 22LR

500 7.62x39 FMJ

Used to keep 1 box ahead before the shortage. Now if ammo is available I buy all I can afford.

BTW, at wally world today they had 2 cases of .380, 5 cases of 9mm, 1 case of 40, had some 38 (gone) , can't get 45 now.

I usually only have a hundred or two of defensive ammo... (expensive hydro shock stuff) but I like to have a thousand or two of offensive ammo... (fmj) full metal jacket, that is what it was made for... 'government approved' offensive use.

Like a 12GA shotgun there's just no arguing with a 45ACP FMJ...

I am somewhat ashamed to tell you what I have on hand, understand that I am a retired cop who worked on a force that reloaded for qualification purposes and always was use to seeing very large inventories. I shoot cowboy and am just starting to get involved with ICORE and have an indoor range about two miles from my home where I can shoot all my reloads for a membership of $300 per year and they allow me to scrounge lead and at times cases. I also reload all of my personal defense rounds.

38 Spec Rounds on hand 5,000 with an additional 7,000 cases

45 Colt Rounds on hand 1,000

41Mag Rounds on hand 800

44Mag Rounds on hand 500

357 Mag Rounds on hand 500

12 Guage Rounds on hand 500 with more empty shells in the garage than I will ever use.

I actually believe that reloading is as much fun and a part of the hobby as the actual range time. Give me my CD with some Cowboy Music on it and a glass of Diet Coke and you have the fixings of some quality bench time.

I did an inventory a few months back, just to try and see how much ammo I had... between .223 and 7.62 rifle ammo and 9mm and and 38/357 I had somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 rounds. And I know for a fact I'm the poor boy on the ammo storage block.

Which brings to mind a story from my life a long long time ago....

I was a very young fellow, 18 and in ROTC and specifically training to be a Ranger. We went out on manuvers in the Frances Marion Swamp... were given only 20 rounds each for our M-14's... "what the heck?' the only answer was "deal with it." In other words, figure out a solution... solution was to rob the 'dead enemies'.

If things get bad, there will be plenty of ammo laying around.

As long as you have a gun in the right caliber. 5.56, 7.62, and 9mm will be the best bets, but I don't have a 7.62 or 9mm.

I reload as well, and enjoy reloading just as much as shooting. Since I have more time to reload than shoot, I end up with pretty good size piles of loaded ammo sitting around (usually .45acp), which is not a bad thing. Right now I have:

.45acp - 50-75 self defense rounds, ~1250 FMJ, lots more components
.45 colt - ~35 Silvertips, 150 cowboy loads, 100 hunting loads, lots of components
.223 - 300 fmj, lots of components (just started reloading .223, trying to work up the most accurate load before I start cranking them out)
.30-06 - ~25 hunting loads
.22lr - ~1600, mostly HP
.380 - ~50 FMJ, ~60 self defense rounds (I don't reload .380)
12ga - ~100 game loads, ~20 00buck loads

Hollowpoints are just too expensive to shoot so not much point
in holding so much.
I keep about 300 premium self defense 9mm HP's and 10 times that much in range ammo.

I had a fellow wanting to trade me some nice jhps and I told him I just can't use them. For what? to go in the closet?
Told him if he had range ammo we could talk.
I can actually shoot it for practice, and if the world comes to an end I can use it on the rioters as well.

Which is kinda surprising that HP's are still priced so high. Once everyone has a few boxes they are pretty much set for life.

38Sp 200 rounds of range ammo 450 rounds of SD

and about 30 slugs
22 about 500 rounds

I have:
400 CCI Mini Mag HP .22LR for the Taurus M94
200 Winchester 9mm target rounds for the Ruger P95
25 Remington Gold Saber HP 9mm for home defense
35 Remington HP 9mm
35 Remington FMJ target rounds.

I saw Walmart had a fresh shipment of 9mm Winchester rounds, $21 for 100 and I'm kicking myself for not buying my limit of 6 boxes...

As a relatively new gun owner, do these ammo shortages come and go?

I could prolly round up 1K or more each of .45ACP, .38, .308, .223, and maybe 9mm too. Not nearly as much .30-06 or .30 carbine or .44.

Dunno how much .22LR on hand but well into five figures. I've shot over 24K of it this year if that gives any indication.

I just picked up 4x50 boxes of Winchester SXZ 9mm "Training Rounds" for $12 a box a Bass Pro. They worried me once I busted them out & they were black bullets? Apparently they are coated with something called Lubalox? Any experience? I just picked up the FMJ's for target shooting...
