I started watching this series last night. Very violent, very grim, but very engaging and entertaining. Seems to be very realistic in terms of what was actually occuring at that time in that part of the country. Certainly does not portray Mormons very favorably. I know my wife would not have lasted past the first few minutes of the first episode because of the violence, so take that as a warning if you feel the same way as my wife does. And unless they are really well disguised, I didn't see any big name actors in this series at all, which adds to the sense of realism.

Just finished watching it. I don't think any of the groups were portrayed in a real positive light. I thought it was a good show looked like they used period weapons . Not a spoiler but with them trying to portray how things were it still gets me when one side whipped the other they leave guns horse and supplies of the concurred behind.

Watched the series. Not at all historically accurate, right off the bat the real location was about 400 miles south and happened in early September and the very young children were spared and adopted out. Lots of other "historical" mistakes. But that is how legends are born.

The only way that historical events prior to 1965 or so can be accurately portrayed is if everyone had smart phones back then, and uploaded everything to the cloud. Without that capability it's all hearsay, and edited news reports. Even today, it's doubtful. You can't record the smells, or many of the other sensory perceptions of the people who lived it.

They also never hit a horse when shooting and can knock the gun out of someone's hand while at a full gallop

Always gather weapons, supplies etc. The vanquished will no longer need them.

My wife doesn't normally care for dark, violent shows, but I convinced her to give the first episode a try the day it came out and by the next evening, we had binged the whole thing. And we both saw the Revenant, and this was written by the same guy, and Bridger was a character in the Revenant (he's the guy who relieved Glass of his rifle and other possessions when he was presumed dead).

Just finished it last night. Loved it! Best western mini series I have see. Yep the savagery was sure there! Thought the acting was quite good too. Only actor I caught was the mormon leader who starred in Sons Of Anarchy. Guns seemed period correct being black powder Remingtons or Colts from the era and not SAA which did not exist in 1858 or 59. Indians scenes looked impressive. Glad I caught this series.

Recognized him and a couple others.

Bridger was played by the actor who I mostly remember from Boardwalk Empire, as Steve Buscemi's brother/partner and later turned enemy. He was also in that recent remake of Perry Mason that got cancelled after a couple seasons.

And the Mormon bride who was saved by the Shoshone tribe is the young CIA agent who is going to Iran in The Agency.

I might give it a try depending on what channel or such it is on but sounds a little over the top for me. If you read Mark Twain's writings about the Mormons, and he was around back then, you will discover he was not a fan......
