Can someone advise what I should expect for accuracy from my Ruger 10/22 Target Tactical VLEH? It was producing 5 shot groups at 60 yards, bench rested which ran around 2 inches or more at times. Some disparity in group size depending on ammo brands but that was expected. Returned to Ruger and they re-barreled it. Firing it with Eley Match ammo bench rested at 100 yards again showed group sizes ranging from down to .78 inch up to 1.8. Five groups averaged 1.6 on a windy day. Is this acceptable or normal for this model .22LR Ruger?

While being fairly accurate, IMHO a factory Ruger 10/22 barrel will probably not be quite as accurate as some of the high-end aftermarket barrels----there are always exceptions though. A lot of people don't like Gun Test tests/reviews, but these might help some:

I don't know about the "Tactical" model,,,,but I never saw a Ruger Hammer Forged Target Barrel that wouldn't shoot! Don't sell them short they are a damm good barrel.
Look at what they bring on ebay,,,right up there with the rest of them. As to a comparison, I have used Tactical Solution, Kidd, E.R. Shaw,
Green Mtn. & E.A. Brown barrels. My Ruger will shoot with any of them. JMHO

PS, I should note that my Ruger is not "stock",,,as a matter of fact the only stock Ruger parts are the Target Barrel and a few Trigger group parts.

This is my Ruger 10/22 target rifle. Not stock Ruger.

It has a Fajen stock, Midway 10/22 Target barrel, Volqartsen hammer/trigger, and topped of with a Leupold 3X9 Vari-X II scope. It was built long before Ruger came out with a 10/22 target model.

It shoots dime sized to nickle sized groups at 50 yard from a rest. It is also great on golf balls at 100 yards offhand <<GGG>>.

Maybe this will be more helpful:

....."From the bench, the Ruger would group into one-half inch groups at fifty yards using both PMC and Wolf match ammo, and would do almost as well with Winchester Dynapoint, which is my favorite squirrel hunting ammo.".....

At one time I read an article(Shooting Times(?)) that had a Volquartsen 10/22 bull barrel that got a 3/8" group at 50yds. But that can't be taken as the norm and is just one case. I suggest that with any make of barrel that you have, try as many different brands of ammo as you can. If you find one brand of ammo that your rifle really likes, then buy all of that ammo(ALL THE SAME LOT NUMBER) that you can.

Either of my mechanically stock base-model 10/22s will shoot better than that--quite a bit better.

1.6" at 100 yards isn't bad at all for almost any .22 rifle, especially on a windy day. .78" is pretty darn good--fantastic, in fact. I can tell you from years of working on the problem that it's harder than it looks to put together a combination of .22 gun, ammo, and windless day that will consistently shoot 1" groups or better. Oh it CAN be done but it's a lot harder than doing it with say a centerfire bolt-action rifle or even an AR-15. I'd say you are on the right track and have a pretty good setup working now.

MOA of less than 1 from any 22 is way good.

I really don't think your original accuracy was that bad... but it sure looks like they gave you an outstanding barrel.... I really don't think you could get better with any aftermarket barrel.

My fellow shooters have supplied some interesting information helping me gauge what to expect from my first run out with a target .22 LR. Back to the 60 yard range since my posting, firing six groups with the factory re-barreled 10/22 Target Tactical VLEH (Hogue over molded stock and bipod) from a rest and produced: .679 (five shots), 1.30 (five shots), .589 (five shots), .80 (three shots), .726 (three shots) and a remarkable (at least to me) group of .295 with three shots. It was a humid afternoon with no wind. Wolf Match Target ammo was used. Going back to the 100 yard range to see what happens there once more.

Heck... I think you need to got out to at least 150 yards.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I realize I am pushing the envelope at 100 with a .22 LR. Light 7 to 8 MPH wind at 106 yards and the Ruger Target Tactical carbine (16 inch barrel) produced three 3 shot groups that measured 1.22, 1.44 and 1.32. I have come to the conclusion that will be sufficient for my expectations on the little .22. :D

Has some one else had similar experiences with the VLEH Model Ruger?
