Rails take away from the smooth looks of a semi in my preference CATTLEDAWG.

Nothing against the rail itself as I am sure at time goes on the manufacturers will get better and better at smoothing it out.

I don't like the looks of a rail. In fact, I deliberately sought out a P345 without a rail because it just looks better IMHO.

Recently, however I bought my first gun with a rail......an XD-45. I'm slowly warming up to the gun, but I still haven't decided if I'm going to mount anything on it yet.

BTW, I wish Ruger offered the P345 with a hi-cap mag like the XD. If they did, I would have bought one instead of the XD. The P345 is one of my all time favorite pistols.

Some guns give you the option for a rail, some don't. My SR9 comes with one without any option. Lets you mount a light or laser for Home Defense and makes it a little more versatile of a weapon at night. I don't have anything on my rail. But I wouldn't get a rail on a 1911 or any of the more 'classic' designed guns. You can, it's just more of a nostalgia thing to me I guess. I'd reserve rails for poly guns and smooth frames for steel/aluminum, just my rule of thumb.

I have been lustin' after a Sig P229...and I like both the SAS version (no rail), and the 229 w/a rail...just tryin' to decide if a rail is needed or not...statistics show most situations where a pistol is needed are in low light conditions...but...that SAS is absolutely a thing of beauty...
