I read this Eleanor Roosevelt quote today and it really struck me.
"Lest I continue in my complacent way, Help me to remember that somewhere out there, a soldier died for me today. As long as there be war, I then must ask and answer: Am I worth dying for?".

It does remind of the end of Saving Private Ryan and Miller's words: Earn this. And the older Ryan visiting the cemetery asking if he had lived a life where he was a worthy.

  • "I offer neither pay, nor quarters, nor provisions; I offer hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles and death. Let him who loves his country in his heart, and not with his lips only, follow me."
Guiseppe Garibaldi

I had an uncle who was among the first wave of Marines to go ashore on the island of Tarawa. For all the years that I knew him, he would grieve over his fellow Marines who died in that assault, and openly wonder why he was spared. If he had enough alcohol to actually talk about the war, it always came down to him saying "Better men than I died on that beach, why was I spared while they lost everything?". We all need to be grateful to those men who died under our flag.

Surrounded by his family, all the people who would not have been born if he hadn't come home. Made me think if his brothers families that were never born and all the families that never existed because 1 man died over there.

Such a great movie.
