A "must" place to visit, and a movie to avoid like the plague

Today I had the true pleasure of visiting the Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, OH. A truly stupendous experience, and in my estimation, a better museum than the Smithsonian Air and Space museum. I spent a full day there, and could easily have planned another full day if I had wanted to really learn about so many of the aircraft on exhibit, but my one day was enough for me. Its free, and bring good walking shoes because you will be covering a lot of ground in these four huge buildings. In the Presidential exhibit there are several planes that served as Air Force One, and you can walk through the planes and see what the accomodations were for our various Presidents. The missile exhibit is amazing, and I for one did not realize just how huge some of these, like the Atlas rocket and the Titan ICBM were. This is a place worth going out of your way to visit.

As to a movie to avoid, don't even consider seeing "The Brutalist" with Adrian Brody. My brother wanted to see this film based upon the many outstanding reveiws that he read about it online, so I went with him. The film is 3 and half hours long and there is a 20 minute Intermission, so you are going to be tortured for 4 full hours. It is just awful, but if you are a fan of porn there are a few scenes that would likely qualify as actual porn and was unnecessary to the plot of the film (not that there is a coherent plot). This film will likely be a contender for "Best Picture" but it is the worst film that I have seen in years. The only saving grace was that my brother paid for the tickets . He ended up hating it as well.

I'm glad you enjoyed your day at the museum. I have been to the Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins, GA & the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fl. It sounds as if where you went had some things that I don't recall seeing at either of those.

You can't see it all in two full days. I've been there 3 times. The Presidential tour is great. Sign up early to do that tour. They always have a few nice planes outside too. Hanoi Taxi and our '73 455 4- speed. Warthog and our '69.

Another good aircraft museum is the AMC (Air Mobility Command) Museum at Dover AFB, DE. Lots of the big aircraft and if you want to walk through a C-5 you can. It has other aircraft also like a B-17 where you can get up close and personal with the ball gun.

I visited with my daughter and a niece a number of years ago while visiting my sister in Ohio. I was only sorry my Dad couldn't go with me. He was an Air Force pilot and there were at least a dozen planes on display he had flown. He gave me a list and I made sure to see every one of them but I would have loved to have him there to tell about his experiences flying those planes. I took a lot of pictures and he filled me in when we reviewed them. A great memory, it meant a lot to me.

Last time we visited the Museum one of the guys in our group was looking at the B-52 on display with considerable interest. Knowing he had been a bomber pilot, I asked him what he thought of the plane, and he responded, "I flew it. I flew this very plane, same tail number!" He was amazed.

He hadn't known "his" plane was in the Museum. We all got a pretty detailed walk-around tour with expert commentary. Small world. 😁

I was not aware how BIG those things are! :ROFLMAO:

My family and friends used to go to Siesta Key every other year at Christmas break when our kids were young and my brother who was ten years older than me would go and his favorite thing to do was to visit the Ringling Brothers Barnum Bailey museum in Sarasota. He thought it was great but I never did go to it.

The actual B-29 that dropped the A-bomb on Nagasaki is in this museum. To cut down on the weight, all the weapons other than the tail gun had been removed, unlike a typical B-29.

I'll add that seeing modern jet fighters up close made me realize that they are so much larger than I had imagined.

Visited the Museum a long time ago. It must have been soon after opening, from what I've read about it. Terrible weather ruined my dream of a great day at Kings Island amusement park.

Even then I knew I had seen something spectacular. Like every American kid I was ate ate clear up with the space program. The displays of rockets was great, space suits, Gemini capsule etc.

The Valkarie bomber was outside, it looked like something from outer space. 50 odd years later it's what I remember most.
